I am really annoyed by the recent Vodafone commercials. Who would ever exclaim 'this wi-fi is so good'? And is that kid saying 'mom'? What NZ kid says 'mom'? Can't they at least make a commercial that talks like real NZ people?

The fact that almost every single one of the 8-10 Linux-based IoS/embedded devices I babysit has a gratuitously incompatible way to set network parameters like the IP address: /etc/network/interfaces, dhcpcd.conf, /etc/network/interfaces fighting with dhcpcd.conf, systemd, netplan, nmcli, ... . Why TF can't they just use one system and stick to it? For every system I need to have a checklist of which particular silly-walk I have to go through to change its IP address, and every time I do an OS upgrade I need to wade through a breadcrumb-trail of assorted config files in various formats with comments saying "this is no longer used, you need to learn some new thing we've dreamed up since the last OS upgrade" until I can find my way through to the end of the chain and the network-config thing that's in fashion this week.

In contrast for Windows 3.11 from 30 years ago: Click on network adapter, properties, type in address or click DHCP. For Windows 10, over a thirty-year timespan: Click on network adapter, properties, type in address or click DHCP.

If I had unlimited free time and/or skill, I'd make my own Linux with a carefully-thought-out UI that doesn't change all the time!

Climbing up into the external equipment area to unplug and replug the ethernet cable on every device to force a DHCP renewal onto a new VLAN.

Then noticing, when they didn't get their new addresses, that I'd set up the PVID wrong and I needed to go back and repeat the whole cycle.

Then noticing, when they still didn't get their new addresses, that the SFP with the link to the outside gear is on a different port than expected (they're redundant so until now I'd never noticed) and I need to go back a third time to do it all again.

Geektastic:

Wheelybins are an “improvement”.

When I was a lad, the bin men walked down the drive, hoisted the bins on their backs, carried them out to the road and emptied them into the truck before returning them to outside the back door, lids affixed.

That’s why they got big tips at Christmas from every house on their route.

Now things have been “improved” in that unique modern sense of the word that means “got worse”! Like banking.

Or in Wellington's case (mid 1980's) they dragged a gigantic sack from house to house into which your bins were emptied - but yes bins left correctly in place with the lid on.

I don't pay a lot of attention to TV ads so can't say I've noticed it.  Many companies, especially larger corporates and banks even more so, go to great lengths (arguably over the top) to ensure the diverse culture of Aotearoa is represented in their ads, maybe this is just another example of it.

(Although as a Dutch immigrant I don't see my people feature very often - maybe I should be offended😜)

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

I don't remember it being dragged, the sack was slung over their shoulder as they ran from bin to bin. Wellington Dusties worked on an "out and return" basis meaning once their run was finished they went home. It was common for them to jump over side fences rather than go in and out of each front gate.

You'd also expect it to be empty - and don't they have a drain hole in the bottom?

a drain in the bottom is the perfect place for cockroaches, ants, mice and rats to get into it.

And also for any rancid liquid at the bottom of the bin to leak out of, onto your drive.  No thanks

I recently used our 240l recycle bin as a document destructor. Dump papers in, cover with water and add some laundry powder. Leave for a couple of days then stir up with a large paint mixing paddle. 99% of it quickly turned to paper mache mush, completely illegible. A few things were printed on plastic but easily separated out.

The green bottle bin has had extra holes added to the corners. Nothing worse than getting old dregs on you when you pick it up.

How did you dispose of the papier mache? Monster project for the kids?

Can you just sprinkle bits over the garden? We don’t have a compost bin as proximity to town belt and concern for vermin. I do like the idea of making a slush of the paper waste.

I put some in the compost, some on the garden under bark chip and mixed seed into the rest that got thrown up a bank. The seeds take between 1-3 months to germinate normally so it will take awhile to see whether it worked.

Yep. And I’ve heard a few ads that give an email address or website and say “… dot co dot en zee”. I hate that. We say zed here.
