When you know New Zealand butter and cheese can be bought on the other side of the world cheaper than they can be bought here in New Zealand you realise that the "international" prices we pay for these products isn't the problem. The problem lies closer to our refrigerators than it does  to Fonterra. Looking at you Foodstuffs and Countdown.

Apparently though there's isn't a problem as the supermarket chains claim they are only taking a normal mark up. What they omit to tell you is they also own the middle men, the wholesalers, which is where the money is creamed off.

Speaking of Countdown - the Whiskey Tango Foxtrot of spending hundreds of millions of dollars to rebrand all the Countdown stores to Woolworths, which can only be described as a colossal waste of money.

New Zealand is playing T20s in the UAE in August.

That's some genuine rocket surgery.

This is the company that said we should be paying international prices for dairy products, ie we should get no subsidy for being the source of those products.

Ahh... but are the individual stores privately owned and are therefore responsible for the markup at the store with the head office not being responsible what independent contractors do...type BS.

Fresh Choice & Super Value are Woolworth's franchises. They only have themselves to blame for Countdown.

Would you trust a "Certified Gasfitter" driving this van with no name, phone number or any identification?

Gasfitters are rare as hen's teeth and often get shared across multiple companies so yes, the generic labelling would be quite OK.

Are you not entertained tonight?

In the spirit of ODIs and coloured clothing to pull in the punters, and recognising the entertainment value of streaking pitch invaders, perhaps the Football Ferns could play naked? Except the goalies, of course.

Yes... the supermarkets are the ones who are defining what is "normal". Foodstuffs says they're about the same as Progressive, who say they're about the same as Foodstuffs. It's normal capitalism... charge what the market will bear.

Hundreds of millions sounds like a high estimate?

but yeah like before that when they rebranded from Woolworths to Countdown..

If I was in charge ...  I'd bust up the sector so that you can't be a wholesaler and a retailer and all wholesalers must be prepared to sell to all retailers on comparable terms.

I'd also consider prohibiting producers selling exclusively to one wholesaler.

Admittedly, none of this would help as much as a third player will.  I'd find a way to support Supie to expand and also provide a medium term tax incentive for a new player to enter the market.

I know you’re trying to be funny but this is a super creepy comment.

Same deal as a sparky, I assume: ask them for the registration card, which should have a photo. Look them up on the publicly-available Register if extra suspicious.

When you do an iOS update, over fibre-connected Wi-Fi, it asks whether you want to download over mobile data. I don't understand the purpose of this question. It seems like it could be paraphrased to "would you like to pay extra to download this update more slowly?".

Can anyone enlighten me?

If the WiFi drops out mid download, it might change whether it cancels the download, or moves to mobile data.

Otherwise... I guess it doesn't really know whether the cellular or WiFi is faster or more stable.

It could also split the download over both connections, but that's unlikely.

According to this item from RNZ, AI can be (is already) used to weed out employees who are thinking of moving on. It is presented as a good thing as it spares employers being blindsided by someone who isn't 100% committed to their job. But the first thing that struck me when I read it is that in most cases it would just cause employers to sideline employees targeted by the AI in favour of others designated more likely to stick around. A self-fulfilling prophecy, in other words. This seems like a pretty stupid and short-sided use of AI to me.
