That the parts I need to complete a project this weekend are "On Vehicle From PBT Nelson Depot to PBT Wellington Depot In Transit" - and have been since 1818hrs on Monday.

I didn't take geography at school but I feel as if PBT may need to have a closer look at their routes, their trucks, or perhaps both...

Trying to integrate with a third-party system. The spec is... interesting. I get the impression that it's a mish-mash of "customer A wants to do this and customer B wants to do this, so let's make them both work".

You then end up with a yes/no field that can take a boolean... or it can take the strings "Y", "N", "0" and "1".

neb: Try buying decent quality gel ink pens here: Price for one single pen is the same as entire pack from Amazon.

Tell me about it. My handwriting is atrocious but for some reason when I use gel ink pens I can generally scrawl something almost legible. I like to take lots of notes during meetings so I go through a few!

Try finding white ones that aren't absurdly overpriced.

Well that's wrong for starters, everyone knows the third value for a boolean is FileNotFound.

(Argh, could the word filters be made a bit more smart so it's possibly to link to sites that have W T F in them, or just not treat those three letters as a "bad word"? The Daily W T F, a totally non-offensive humour site, is being blacklisted... to follow the above link, copy and paste the string, then change the 'x' to a 't'. And it's completely SFW).

Oh, I have plenty of those, whenever one of the blue or black ones runs out it starts writing in white on white paper. How many would you like?

I'm quite familiar with that site :)

They're the nicest writing implements I've ever used (and that's from someone who wrote most of their school work using a fountain pen). Some years ago at a get-together the attendees were asked to name their favourite tool. I wrote "Uniball Signo 0.7mm Gel Ink Pen" [*]. Cory Doctorow wrote "Rhetoric". We both appreciated each other's choices :-).

[*] The one with the cap, not the clicky one which is less comfortable to hold.

Countdown like all supermarkets have numbers for the bulk bin items.  I half filled two bags of stuff and no pens to note the numbers, likely blamed on covid but they never replaced them anyway pre-covid once they went missing as evidenced by left behind the bits of cord that used to be attached.  That's OK, I'll take photos of the numbers with my phone.

So I go to the self-serve checkout, scan a few items then come to the two bulk bin items.  There's a product search but you enter it by name not number which renders those bin numbers useless.  Searching for the first item - sultanas - gives a different name to what was on the bin label and it's priced by different weights.  So I call over a lady for assistance and point all this out.  She just cancels it before I've finished explaining that it might actually be the same thing.  To enter the numbers of the bins she has to go into a special mode.

After finding the item I put it into the scanned side and the machine complains about an unexpected item, again she has to authorise to clear that message

Then I have the second bag but she's wandered off already so I call her back.  This time I ask how do I as a customer enter those numbers without store help.  She just authenticates again and points at the staff screen for me to enter the numbers.  She ignored my repeated question on how I can enter that myself and refers me back to the screen.  Repeat all above for the second bag but once the machine complains yet again about the unexpected item in the collection side I grab my loot and go through the usual check out.

Oh, and the lady at the check out didn't appreciate that I had half of the stuff already in a bag - a faux pas for which there's a big sign.

Odd. In my local Countdown I can use the option to enter the code instead of the “look up item” option.

The options were basically a few buttons for categories but none of them provided entry for numbers.  All were text search.  New World's are much simpler and clearer on-screen visually

This is why I absolutely hate self checkouts. Operating a checkout seems simple enough, but if you don't do it every day then it's more complicated than you'd expect.

neb: Uniball Signo 0.7mm Gel Ink Pen

Pilot G-2 EX 0.7 is my weapon of choice. Difficult to get here so sometimes I have to default to the standard G-2. Uses the same ink but not nearly as nice to hold as the EX. No

I use a G2 as a backup in situations where the Uniball doesn't work, in particular the ones with caps can leak if you leave them in pockets and they get jostled too much so for EDC I have a G2, for all other times a Uniball.

Taking the complaint about NZ consumers being screwed from earlier on, the first Google hit for the G2 is Officemax at $11.29 for one pen.

One single plastic clicky pen.

Helping friends plan a new house layout for a reno and hearing the same thing I-don't-know-how-many other people doing a reno have said: We want to have lots of space for entertaining and having dinners and blah blah blah, so they sacrifice the entire house layout for this goal, tiny poky bedrooms and a cramped bathroom and zig-zaggy corridor to join it all up in order to get a giant living/dining/kitchen area.

And then about once a fortnight they have a few people over and everyone sits on the couch with the food on their laps while they watch something on Netflix, and the one-third of their house space they've sacrificed for all the entertaining they were going to do gets used as junk storage.
