neb: Helping friends plan a new house layout for a reno and hearing the same thing I-don't-know-how-many other people doing a reno have said: We want to have lots of space for entertaining and having dinners and blah blah

I got given a dining room table and chairs when I bought a house. I didn't really want it but it first home and the house was devoid of furniture. I knew it would just default to storage of crap we haven't put away or found a place for. Not once used for a meal in two years or so!

My parents gave me a too-big-for-the-space table and chairs for my birthday this year. I invited them around for dinner a few days later, but other than that it's been effectively unused.

More reliable friends, perhaps. The last time i invited someone they accepted, then cancelled a couple of hours beforehand with the excuse "I forgot that I have work" (she really did, but how can you forget that?!)

For another annoyance, so-called "dark patterns". A site did the usual thing where it refuses to give you information until you work through the cookie popup. This one has a big Accept All button, or alternatively you can apparently toggle the various sub-cookies on and off. I say "apparently" because they've created a custom UI for this where you can swap them between grey and red. There is no explanation around which of these is off and which is on, presumably to trick people into enabling cookies they don't want.

Slightly OT but my daily weapon of choice is a fountain pen. I was given a $1,000 Montblanc for my birthday from my kids :-)  it wasn't entirely a random gift as they know I do like using fountain pens  and I had been eyeing this pen for a while.

I will add that my two kids are both in full-time professional employment and probably making a lot more than I am now :-)

Probably belongs in the ‘Smile’ thread.

It’s great to have something that brings you joy. As this thread attests, there are plenty of things in life that do exactly the opposite.

I hope your penmanship does it justice ;-)

Why? My parents used to tell me that and I never could see why they wanted me to do something I didn’t want to do.

They made it sound like I should collect them like Lladro figurines or the there was some specific number I should attain or I’d have failed some test.

In much the same way as Facebook has destroyed the true definition of “Friend”, overuse and misuse of “Crisis” and “Unprecedented” have rendered their meaning, meaningless.

Anyone else notice that Blu-Tack is absolute crap these days? Overly sticky, pulls apart too easily. You'll get globs of it stuck to your fingers and you can't use it to pull Blu-Tack remnants off the wall. I don't want to sound like the grumpy old guy who says "The old stuff was better! They changed the formulation!" but... the old formulation really was better. Now I'm using off-brand tac to pull Blu-Tack off the walls.

Blu-Tack is herpes now as far as I'm concerned.

Ok guys, hot news on the domestic chores front. This plastic scraper thing, Multi-Purpose Cooktop Scraper makes short work of removing Herpes-Tac from walls in one chunk. You can then wipe the Herpes-Tac off the plastic blade with a paper towel, dig a hole in the neighbours back yard, put the mess in the hole, set fire to it, fill in the hole and get a Catholic priest, a Maori priest and even a Voodoo priest to perform their respective rituals over the burial site.

See also “beyond”. Now reduced to incorrect use as a replacement for “very”, “extremely” etc.

I am beyond annoyed.

The argument being that given a sufficiently large number of friends, we'll eventually get some who use their entertainment space/formal dining space for entertaining/formal dining?

Last week we had two dinners with friends, both not formal dining. This week it's three, all three not formal dining. In two of the three places the dining table is a crafts table, bill-paying table, laptop table, anything but a dining table. In the third it's occasionally used for sit-down dinners but more usually also a laptop table. Our dining table actually has a massive glass slab over it in acknowledgement of the fact that its principal use is as a work table.

At the moment except for Mother Neb I'm more or less drawing a blank on people I know who use their dining table principally as a dining table.

Even a Caran d’Ache Gothica can't save my scribble. My handwriting has a half-life, on writing I can decipher it 100%, after x days I've got a 50:50 chance of deciphering it, after 2x days it's 25%, etc.

Having said that, a pleasant-to-use pen encourages more legible writing. I used a Lamy pur throughout school and university, so much so that I wore down the brushed-metal sides to a smooth finish, and wrote much more neatly than when I used a ballpoint. Same with gel ink pens, a ballpoint says "this is a cheap and nasty writing instrument, scribble away" while a gel pen says "this is a precision instrument, use with care".

My pet peeve there is the misuse of the term "lies", specifically as used in "they're lying to us" or "we've been lied to". About 99.9% of the time "we've been lied to" just means "I wasn't listening properly" or "I don't want to believe what I'm being told" or "there's disagreement over the story" or "initial reports were based on incomplete information" or "things have changed since the initial story" or a million other variants. It's an unprecedented crisis in misuse of the term.
