Thanks. I had no idea... I don't know any Jacks. Or maybe it's just not common any more? Of course that's an 'annoyance' with reading old things; they can touch on things that have fallen by the wayside without any fanfare, leaving the modern reader confused. A few months ago I was reading an article where someone was reading 300-year-old records and found the phrase "we'd got up from our first sleep". First sleep? It turns out that at the time, people would typically go to bed at about 21:00, sleep for around two hours, then get up again. It was fascinating to read, actually. Now I've turned this annoyance into a smile :)

What's really annoying me this week is how much you lose on motor vehicles.

Sold my 2006 Volvo XC70 this past weekend (buyer was a nice guy and he paid what the market dictated it was worth).

Vehicle new in 2006 was over $110k

I purchased in 2013 for $13k

Sold in 2022 for $2500

Admittedly, it'd done a few kms, but I'd spent around $8500 on it in the last couple of years, so it owed me a bit.

Annoying. But also understandable.

Jack is a hugely popular name for boys:

https://figure.nz/chart/e1zW9VYYx44qXNEM

The nickname dates a long way back:

https://dmnes.wordpress.com/2017/01/28/why-is-jack-a-nickname-of-john/

One of the best-known examples was JFK who was widely informally known as Jack.

Way back, Jack only became a name in its own right after becoming so common as a nickname for John. It is often thought that Jack was an anglicised version of the french Jacques or was derived from Jacob but neither of those are correct.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

But it owed a lot more to the guy you bought it off. $14k depreciation per year!!!

Q:  Will you now be updating your profile sig  (or did you have more than one)?

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

I remember the aha moment I had when I first realised why John Farnham's most successful album was called Whispering Jack.

Interesting. I just looked at our staff directory at work and we have 1 Jack and 31 Johns. Of course, none of our employees were born in 2021 so it'll take a while for that to all filter through.

I've never dabbled with second hand euro cars but I've had old euro motorbikes and they certainly have their foibles.

I had to laugh when I saw someone's sig, mebbe on reddit, along the lines of 'owning a second hand euro car keeps you one breakdown away from bankruptcy'.

We had the same car - although newer (from when the Ocean Race event took place, whenever that was) and we were offered $13,000 or so P/X when we looked at an XC90 a couple of years ago.

Last year we sold it to the same dealer for $24,000 cash...!

The way my wife has started to cut camembert, or any round cheese for that matter.

Rather than slicing into segments from the middle, she's started slicing it in half and then cutting strips from the middle parallel to the first cut meaning she gets all the cheese in a couple of slices and I'm left with two bits of rind from the outside edges.

It's OK, I'm sure this thread will still be active when it comes time for you to post an update for the 2021 cohort.

That would be grounds for divorce in our household. Its up there with putting the toilet paper on the roll the wrong way.

Thanks for reminding me.

I shall be amending the sig to simply beg for donations to the Handsomedan benevolent fund.

Is that the voice of bitter experience?

I knew my old Guzzi was authentic when it broke down the first time I rode it. Luckily 'twas nothing major.....
