I've never dabbled with second hand euro cars but I've had old euro motorbikes and they certainly have their foibles.

I had to laugh when I saw someone's sig, mebbe on reddit, along the lines of 'owning a second hand euro car keeps you one breakdown away from bankruptcy'.

I knew a guy who had an obsession with Alfa Romeo's.

He would joke about making sure that you always made sure they included the bag, if you bought a second-hand Alfa.

When asked "What bag?", he'd reply - "The one you use to collect the bits that fall off as you drive".

MS Teams again.

"Something went wrong when we tried to download updates."

And the "something" is...? How in the world am I expected to debug the problem when there isn't a single hint as to what it's about?

Six weeks later I finally got around to debugging this. It turns out that the Teams updater is so utterly flaky that it can't handle the icon being renamed from "Microsoft Teams" to "Teams".

@Senecio:

martyyn:

The way my wife has started to cut camembert, or any round cheese for that matter.

Rather than slicing into segments from the middle, she's started slicing it in half and then cutting strips from the middle parallel to the first cut meaning she gets all the cheese in a couple of slices and I'm left with two bits of rind from the outside edges.

That would be grounds for divorce in our household. Its up there with putting the toilet paper on the roll the wrong way.

Interestingly you left out what "the wrong way" would be - which should be a topic with its own thread.

Nah, the original patent shows the right way. No debate there. No, sir.

I knew my old Guzzi was authentic when it broke down the first time I rode it. Luckily 'twas nothing major.....

Friend of mine has one and once regaled me with stories about it, I think it spent more time getting parts bolted back onto it than she spent riding it. She'd get alarming service bulletins like "rear wheel may become detached".

Waiting.

After the recent deluge that Auckland experienced, we had some flooding - didn't seem like that big a deal: we cleaned it up and dried the various bits, but noticed some minor wall/gib damage, so contacted the insurers. They sent flood restoration specialists around to inspect and dry what they could.

A week ago, they left us with half of the underlay in the lounge and bedroom taken away and the carpet loosely tossed back into place while we await the builders to come and assess - recommendation is to replace about 1/3 of the floors.

They also marked areas of concern for the builders to come and deal with - pencil X's all over the place in the kitchen, dining and lounge etc.

Insurers told us the builders would be in touch in 48hrs. A week later, we are still waiting for a call. Then it'll only be to book a time for them to come and assess the work required.

I've been told it could then be up to 3 months before they can even start!!

So with winter coming, we are likely to have still-damp walls, half of the house with no underlay and an uncertain future for several walls...annoying.

Called the insurance co - the builders will call us today. Funny that.

Could be worse though - we could be in Wairoa.

Local builder has just received Gib ordered in Nov for house he is building. Condition of delivery is that house had passed framing inspection so only for immediate requirements.

Interesting. We had a tiler who is part of a bathroom renovation come in to sort a shower issue and I was talking about gib shortages. He was saying you can get it relatively easily in smaller quantities, but house lots are a problem. He said if we needed 2-3 sheets for our bathroom he was relatively confident he could get that. Obviously, he could say anything.

Yeah one of the flood remediation guys was a construction foreman, who was moonlighting as there's no gib, therefore no way to complete the several projects that their company are in the middle of. Everything ground to a halt and he went looking for a short-term gig to see him through.

I was talking to our architect and he said some of the more enterprising builders saw the writing on the wall and leased warehouses and stocked up on various materials. Their builds in my town where the ones carrying on at near normal speeds. They were billing the owners well in advance and kept those clients materials separate in the warehouses. That way they didn't have lots of their money locked into supply costs which were sitting in warehouses.

It is often thought that Jack was an anglicised version of the french Jacques or was derived from Jacob but neither of those are correct.

I had an Uncle Jack whose proper name was Jacobus.
