JimmyH: Regardless of what you think of JC, I suspect that when the dust settles he isn't actually the loser here.

He has already made a lot of money - and reports in the UK media are that other TV networks are already bidding to get him to do a motoring show, and that he may have been offered 10 million pounds to sign. Presumably May and Hammond would go with him as part of a package deal. They will probably wind up on network that gives them a lot more freedom to say things than the cloyingly-PC BBC, and will make a lot more money in the process.

The losers here look to be:

  • The BBC, which will have to refund a lot of network purchasers of the episodes that won't be made, will lose a 50 million pound ($NZ 100m+) per anum revenue stream, and will have paid a lot of money to purchase the IP and branding associated with the show (ironically from a company that I understand JC part owned) only to discover that it now isn't worth nearly what they thought.

  • The other staff on the show (many of whom presumably lose their jobs if TG now fails to be as commercially successful and is finally cancelled), and the hundreds of other staff at the BBC who will presumably get the chop when the BBC restructures to try and cut costs to deal with a 50 million quid a year revenue shortfall.

  • The UK public (including the Guardianistas who so loudly called for his head) - as a fair amount of other programming was underwritten by the profitability of selling TG internationally, and presumably will now have to be axed.

  • The fans of TG, of which I am one, who will lose a show they liked - even if the BBC trys to keep it going with an insipid facsimile under the same branding.

Which is something that I those who were banging the drum so loudly for his dismissal at least thought through.

(Personally, given TG's international popularity, I think it would be a stroke of absolute marketing genius for Netflix to snap the trio up with a juicy offer to make a new motoring show).

So when someone famous or profitable does something illegal like commit assault, we should just let it slide, and maybe even cover it up so it doesn't get into the press.
Check.

Moving on, anyone remember jimmy saville?

I absolutely agree. They're fools. Most people watching Top Gear didn't do so in spite of Jeremy Clarkson.

Whatt?! So it's perfectly ok to verbally attack someone in the workplace for over 20 mins, then physically assault them, and the employer is a fool?

It's not an issue as to who is a winner or not, I'm sure the BBC would have much preferred JC not to act they way he did. They simply had to act as a responsible employer, that's the issue.

I can't see it any other way either.  It's not "PC gone mad" for an employer to sack a spoilt star when they assault other staff members.  Given Clarkson's publicly pouring petrol on the fire (rather than apologising for his actions), what other option did they have?

I'm happy to support JC through all of the silly "bad words" fiascos because I don't see it as "hate speech" or "likely to incite others" but I can't support bullying and assault.

KiwiNZ: The use of a racist term in the Bridge Special in Burma clear and obvious and disgraceful

JC to one side for a moment ..... do you think Mike King is racist? Or Billy T, Billy C or hundreds of other brilliant comedians who have the skill to get us to laugh alongside and at each other?

Call me naive, but I had never heard the term 'slope' before that incident.

The fervour with which some people cry "racism" always feels to me the same as watching the videos of the unwashed masses in the middle east burning US flags and demanding beheadings for someone daring to defame the pedo I mean prophet Mohammed. I don't like this thing, burn it at the stake!

KiwiNZ:
I thought that was last weeks episode or was it last months hmmmm

Do you watch it just for something to get offended about?
Serious question.
Is life that boring?

Or are you just trolling on here for something to do?

We understand, we all know you think it's racist.

No I am a long time auto enthusiast and from a family of the same, my father was a motor Engineer. I watched TG for s long time have many of their DVDs books magazines and have the Top Gear calendar every year.

It was, in fact, hilariously funny.

joker97: that's correct. chauvenistic = bad. feminists = good. i cannot go any further otherwise i might cross lines ...

Chauvinism in its modern meaning is about male superiority, feminism is about equality.

I'd say feminism these days was less about equality than it was about promoting women's interests over and above men's.

Just chucking it out there but what if JC had no intention of re-signing another season and this is his way of quitting?

As far as the Beeb are concerned they are caught between the proverbial rock and hard place with no where to go, they had no option but to do what they did and i think most would agree, on the flipside by "doing the right thing" they have potentially (most likely?) cut a massive revenue stream and upset a lot of people along the way who don't care for the politics of it all, they/we just want the show

I see no humour in those comments at all.

I did. While personally, I didn't find it terribly funny, I can still understand what the humourous aspect was. It was a bit schoolboy-ish, but basically a play on words in the same vein as the carry on films. I, and most people I know, have probably made quips that were a lot more tasteless that that, in private, at some point.

I agree that the beeb probably had no option, and he probably had to go after the assault. However, up to that point, I don't think he had done anything remotely justifying sacking. Remember too that it wasn't just JC involved. TG isn't a live show, so the remarks he made would have been viewed by the producers and (where there was any doubt) the beeb's lawyers before they were allowed to go to air.

And THIS Lias, has to be THE most brutally honest and TRUE post in this thread, so full kudos to you.

The reason flags are burning is ............ well, in your opening remarks!
