They are advertising via twitter and facebook.  But, for example, on twitter stats has 181 followers so penetration is minimal.

Not sure about snapchat and others

I've seen and heard radio and TV advertising and there has been mainstream news coverage (web, TV, radio, print).

Stats NZ has 11k followers on Twitter. Regardless, advertising on these platforms (and Linked, Instagram) doesn't target followers only. It can be targeted any group by region, device, followers, etc regardless of following the account or not.

Oops I quoted the following figure.  11k is surprisingly high for an organisation dedicated to statistics/paint drying ...

I am yet to see a single reference to the census (or StatsNZ) on Twitter.  I don't follow that many NZ twitter accounts and the only govt account follow is CD so that may be why.

And yet according to The Spinoff there were videos on social media, etc:

Well of course. Ad agency Clemenger BBDO got the contract to promote the event, and Statistics New Zealand says advertising and marketing costs have been budgeted at $4.476 million. This covers all advertising costs and media space print, television, radio, internet and “out of home” – billboards/buses/AdShells and production of all marketing materials.

A significant portion ($1.8m) of the budget will go on paid advertising placements like television spots, social media, radio spots, billboard sites and newspaper ads, Statistics New Zealand says.

It has made 19 ads for TV and 22 videos. The government agency says initial data (there will be more once the census campaign ends) shows its 30 second TV ads were seen by 2,357,120 people (aged 18 and up) more than once, while radio ads reached 266,629 people (aged 18+). Its shorter 15 second TV ads were seen more than once by an estimated 2,259,554 people.

The campaign included 62 billboards, which had estimated “daily traffic visuals” of 263,545. “We don’t get daily traffic visuals for bus back,” Stats NZ’s James Weir says.

On digital media (where it had five 15 second videos) the campaign is claiming 1,978,441 impressions, 1,283,538 video views and 752,260 completed views.

The rest of the budget went on campaign development, creative identity and positioning – the “Let’s find out” slogan for example – testing and research, production of all advertising assets including billboard skins, TV ads, letters, education materials (easy read guides) and project management.

The only advert I saw was this thread. Otherwise I would have had no idea.

What about the emails I sent late November last year about the 2018 Census Q&A thread?

What about word of mouth?  It's been a topic of conversation for the last month around the people I know (and don't know).

Many of his posts in the past have started with the premise of overhearing something in Doctors surgeries/his local village and various other places. Topic wasn't negative commentary about red colour coded political parties - not a single word heard, promise! :-D

Fortunately I've not needed to visit the doctors lately and haven't really been anywhere for a while except maybe a supermarket.
My wife did mention last night that we needed to remember to do it.

No-one is asked about their sexuality.  Everyone's sexual identity is being ignored.

The census is primarily about information gathering - not identity.  If lgbtqi etc people have significantly different needs of government services than the population as a whole people then there is a basis for collecting the info.  Otherwise it's info the govt doesn't need and therefore shouldn't collect.

Sexuality is generally considered to comprise a spectrum, not neat categories.   More importantly, a census that requires people to declare their sexuality requires everyone to declare it, regardless of orientation.  I don't see why the govt needs to know my sexuality.  I consider that info highly personal.  It would be the most private and personal question on the census.

If it that info was to be gathered then (like religion) there should be an option to withhold the info.  Incidentally I don't think the religion question belongs in the census either.

Over the last few years I have been participating in the New Zealand Attitudes and Values study and in the most recent annual survey there was a question about what is your 'sexual orientation' or something like that. I just wrote 'none' because I couldn't be bothered researching what that actually means.

The 'object to answering' option under religion in the census was interesting because I would have thought having that option would introduce a self-selection bias but, bearing in mind the census is compulsory by law, you really can't force people to answer highly personal questions like this.

I certainly hope that we don't see an increase in the number of sensitive personal questions in future censuses.

I can't believe that the Census contained the questions it did. For something that happens so rarely, and allows a valuable snapshot of where the country is at and what they want in the future, I can't believe the best they could come up with is, do you have A4 Mould and can you dress yourself?

Massive missed opportunities to collect additional valuable information.

I have an idea, not sure if it's better to be it's own thread, however; Can anyone come up with between 1-3 better/additional questions, they could have asked that might have provided better insights into either the current state of NZ, or what might be useful in predicting resource usage for the future?

I agree with you on that.

There's a huge problem with (essentially subjective) "self assessment" used for collecting data.  It's not just that publicity / media coverage of "issues" might influence an individual's response now - rendering it inaccurate as a "snapshot", it's also that publicity / media coverage is likely to change for any number of reasons between this "snapshot" and the next - so it's not going to be possible to make any honest conclusion about any trend, any need for future action, or to measure success of any actions underway now.

Gender is different to sexuality.  There is a politically noisy section of society who recognize there is a percentage of people who are neither male or female or significantly a bit of both. Extra chromosomes etc.

As a useless piece of information peoples sexuality etc is defined in three main parts.

Gender - what physical bits do you have (and some have both or chrmosomally have both)

Gender identification: Which gender do you feel you are - e.g. some people feel born in wrong body etc

Sexuality - who do you like banging your bits against.

Personally I like people to know my preferred personal pronoun is "Oh heavens to betsy you are by far the most beautiful man I've ever seen"

1. What sex were you when you were born?

Male OR Female

2. How do you identify yourself today?

Male OR Female OR Transgender OR Confused OR Non of the above

3. How would you like to be identified in the future?

Male OR Female OR Transgender OR Still Confused OR Mind your own business
