There's an opportunity there for fish & chip shops to sell another product and make more money.

Most of them also sell a few different hamburgers too. Many of them these days are also Asian-operated, so also sell various Asian takeaway options.

One problem for fish and chip shops selling pies could be the timeframe it takes to bake one, as against the couple of minutes to fry a piece of fish and a few chips.

Can't be worse than those disgusting sausages on sticks they sell.

Some of them used to (and may still do) sell a deep fried banana on a stick if you prefer ... hey, it's fresh fruit, so it must be better for you than a deep fried Mars bar. ;-)

mattwnz: I haven't had a pie for over 10 years.. When they are less than $1 each at the supermarket, you have to wonder what the quality of meat is like. The only good pies are those that are either home made, or made by a qulaity  pie shop.

Food Standards Australia New Zealand say a meat pie has to have at least 25% "meat".

From Wiki:
The meats allowed by FSANZ in a meat pie are beef, buffalo, camel, cattle, deer, goat, hare, pig, poultry, rabbit and sheep. Kangaroo meat, a leaner alternative, is also sometimes used. However, most pie manufacturers specify 'beef' in their ingredients list; typically, those using other types of meat will simply put 'meat' in the list instead. FSANZ's definition of meat includes snouts, ears, tongue roots, tendons and blood vessels. Only offal (such as brain, heart, kidney, liver, tongue, tripe) must be specified on the label. Wild animals ("slaughtered ... in the wild state") may not be used.

Our boss shouted us George Pies last week for lunch.

AWFUL.

Really fatty; like, I could taste actual fat, and I had a light film of it inside my mouth for the rest of the day.

Didn't like them then and I don't like it now.

That's obvious though, right? They certainly aren't going to make them better than they did back in the day!

Had my first GP pie yesterday..... since I use to bake and sell the things, feel like Im in a good position to give an opinion ;)

Very close to the original, little bit too much cheese and gravy. Pastry was bang on.

Bought back memories....

I've had a couple of them. Quite like them actually.

ZollyMonsta: Cardboard pastry and Expensive. The only familiar thing is the thermonuclear temperature mince that squirts out and runs down your hand.

Haha, there are possibly more annual A&E injuries in New Zealand due to molten Georgie Pie filling spillage than to wildlife attacks.

Haha, do they have a 'Caution: Contents may be hot' warning on the bag?

Did get the odd burnt tongue back in the day (too much beer = not enough blowing on the pie)
