Does anyone know what the Kordia transmission fees are now?

One of the reasons the networks are struggling and the recent Newshub crisis are the exorbitant transmission fees from Kordia which to no surprise is owned by the government. Before digital, stations could own their own frequencies after they were put up for auction and so there was no rent. Some local channels, such as Canterbury TV, have gone off air because they couldn't afford the transmission fee which I was told at that time was $880,000 per year just to hold the channel 40 slot. Furthermore, I was told that is the price a network pays to transmit across the whole country; no discount was given for having a smaller reach. By my reckoning, they should have only been paying about $75,000 as they were transmitting to less than one tenth of the country but anyway...

What are transmission costs today for each channel slot? Over $1M? Think of how many channels each network as. Government greed is destroying private media in this country.

Peters doesn't have to answer any questions he doesn't like. The media don't have to put up with gratuitous insults. Seems pretty simple to me.

Actually, I think the media does have to do just that, in so far as giving fair airtime to politicians, if it takes public money.

To be honest Peters is playing with fire. If they wanted to they could spin it any way at all and destroy him with it if they wound him up to say the right thing at the right time.  Once one of them catches him out, they'll all pile on - nothing like a good story! - and he's a goner.

Hard disagree. If a politician wants to stand there and insult the media he can do that via his own channels. If he wants to behave like a petulant child he can do that on his own.

RustyViewer: Government greed is destroying private media in this country.

Kordia is profitable and provides several essential and emergency services. It may be an interesting point to examine. Newsgathering is likewise a public good and an essential emergency service. Perhaps genuine national newsgathering and associated programming deserves a break from some aspects of the fee.

Personally I don't think Kordia fees were responsible for the recent destruction at all. Overseas elephant sneeze mainly.

Imo Newshub's internet presence and footprint was horribly underdeveloped and any new entity or continuation will need to look at that as a big part of the picture.

He has gone well over the top.  However, I don't think govt should ever, for any reason (however benign) use funding to influence editorial decisions/'narrative'.  That did happen (to a limited extent) and I don't think it's healthy in a democracy.

If govt wants to pay for advertising to promote particular views/ideas ... I have no problem with that, provided it's obvious it's a government message.  They do that for operational stuff now (e.g. ACC).

Nah, Winston in NZ's Trump. He's not just immune to media criticism - he thrives on it. It's easy when you only need to be a 5% politician.

Speaking on Tuesday morning, Lee struck a more sympathetic tone and suggested her initial response was because she was rattled. "It came as a shock. I'm a former journalist, I know what that's like," Lee said.

Rattled?? I would have thought being a journalist would have hardened her up to difficult questions like this. Maybe she could calm herself down by watching Sky for a bit 🙄

What exactly are people proposing she do about it? Why is she more answerable than the owners of the actual private company that has made the decisions to cease Newshub operations?

Given her job, I think voters are entitled to know what she thinks about this. Not that she is answerable, but that she has a part to play in whatever comes next.

She's answered questions in the house and in three stand ups. What else would you like to know?

She’s not responsible or accountability for Newshub restructuring. Why would she want to be associated with it? There’s no benefit for her and she has no responsibility for it so she’ll stay a long way away from it.

Ditto why is it the ministers problem that newshub is closing shop. It is also not up to this govt to bail Time warner out.

I don't think it's the government's job to bail them out either. But she is the minister concerned and the public have a right to know what her government's plan is in regards to not just Newshub but New Zealand journalism and broadcasting more generally. They spent 6 years opposing the previous government; they must have some idea of what they want to do instead, surely?

Not particularly high hopes though. This is the same MP who loudly pontificated about how we needed to tighten up our copyright laws with a three strikes law to protect artists blah blah blah immediately after tweeting about the awesome KPop mix tape her friend made for her.

Still, it's been 12 years. Let's wait to see what she comes up with.
