So it hasn't actually been confirmed what people with raincheck's will get?

I have not had it confirmed, phoned the Lower Hutt store today and they didn't know/weren't gonna tell.

I think it might have the Atom N270 instead of the 280. A bit hard to tell with these, sometimes same model number can be quoted (and is probably) configured with slightly different specs, possibly changes over the product cycle.

I'd thought it isn't possible to provide a different product/brand to the one that you raincheck-paid for? Isn't that contractually incorrect?

Under contract law, because you have paid for it and the specific model is printed on the invoice, they do legally have to provide you with that model, or the newer equivalent, if it is 'at least' the same specs in every way. However if you agree, they can provide you with an alternative model.

That is why I am somewhat surprised that they were making people pay for them, which then legally entered them into a contract. If instead you just put your name down for one, it would be far easier for them to provide you with a different brand/model at that same price.

I havn't paid for mine anyway..
The person/people that use the HarveynormanNZ twitter page said this tho "Hi just waiting confirmation from product team who are in flight atm to CES. Will let everyone know when I have confirmation."

Someone on the Twitter should ask if they can provide a model number ASAP, so we can size up how good/bad it is. From the models that have been suggested, the 1005HA looks to be my preferred option. The 1000HA/HE have the slower processor and the 1008HA only has 2 USB ports and a fixed battery. The 1005HA seems to be identical to the HP specs in every way.

I wonder if the reason they are not providing a number is that they intend to supply several different models because of the numbers of rainchecks involved, and the dead stock ASUS might have and want to flog off.

Editors' Note (June 25, 2009): Anyone interested in the 1008HA reviewed here is advised to check out the Asus Eee PC 1005HA (released after this review was written). It offers a very similar design, but with a removable battery that lasts significantly longer than the 1008HA model.

With minilaptop competition heating up, even Asus--the company that practically invented the Netbook--has to step up its game. While the internal components will be familiar, the new Eee PC 1008HA (also known called the Seashell) represents a radical design change from the boxy Eee PCs we've seen before, with a slim, tapered design that makes it one of the best-looking Netbooks we've come across.

To get down to about 1 inch thick, some engineering slight-of-hand was required. The VGA output uses a dongle, the Ethernet jack is angled to fit into the thin body, there's a custom-molded (nonremovable) battery, and an LED display shaves a few millimeters off the lid.

Just had a call and have been told the netbook will be 3-4 weeks away. They are currently being built.
Does that mean that hp are making more of them just for Harvey Norman??

That delay does suck especially for those people who have already paid their money. HN have just got a 3-4 week interest free loan from their customers! Did they confirm that it is an HP mini laptop that is being built?

they have already confirmed it is being replaced with an Asus.

If you aren't happy with the wait I'm sure you can go and get your money back.

They won't be 'especially built' for HN, the 'being built' statement will most likely be untrue, and they're just awaiting shipment of probably EOL models from overseas.

No, he just said "They are currently being built." which, to me, sounds like they are getting more of the same model from HP.

I'm not saying who is wrong, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were waiting for a shipment of Asus rather than building new HP Netbooks. Occam's Razor. And it's not unheard of for salespeople to be wrong.

Just spoke to my local HN store and they confirmed that it will be an ASUS with the exact same specifications are the HP mini has. I assume that means every spec including size and weight although there might understandibly be a few grams and centimeters in it. It will be black in colour - for those who care about colour. The estimated arrival is about 3-4 weeks. I asked about the model number but they suggested these were being built to spec for HN and so it was not any published model number.

Overall it sounds reasonably good however I find it hard to believe that ASUS would assemble a device especially for HN. Anyone else have any joy getting any kind of commitment on what the model number is?
