Well with unemployment levels even before the earthquake there should be a big labour pool to draw on!!

I really think the powers that be should really take stock of whether it is worth re-building the city (I know I'm not a resident so have no emotional attachment so to speak) but it could all be undone with another quake.
This is a mini Haiti in our country and will have serious economic impacts on the region and country.

Maybe a skills shortage but try getting a job - you have to have absolutely every qualification and experience even to get an interview and the competiton is huge.

2/3's of the buildings are still standing, so to suggest that we just walk away from that lot might be a little extreme.

Chances of me heading into CBD this year = 0

I wonder how many people will just say 'no' when asked if they're go back to working in there?

Sure, there will be people with no choice. Those with family to feed and no other place to go, but how many people will just find a safer place to be?

My aunt who works for Public trust got a job for 4 weeks in Auckland. They're paying for her accommodation, giving her a rental car and paying for petrol, as well as a fairly big bonus since no one can get into their building in the CBD in Chch. I think quite a lot of people would be considering looking else where for employment and stability. And I dont blame them one bit

I think you're right. Over time as the city starts to recover people will return but that will take upwards of ten years.

In the meantime people will want to move away from Christchurch which will put pressure on the housing and employment markets around the rest of the country and the government are going to have to be careful about how they manage that. Personally I'm hoping that this will be an opportunity to pump some good economic growth into the secondary cities like Dunedin, Invercargill and Palmerston North whereas if we have an influx of people into cities like Auckland, Wellington and Tauranga where the infrastructure is already struggling to cope with the population growth then we could have some major problems on our hands.

One bit of reassurance as things start to get rebuilt is the buildings have to be built to a much tougher earthquake code (same/stronger as wellington) so if/when another 6 pointer hits they should be better off

It will be nice to see a fresh new city rise up.

I'm sure we'll have lots of green space for a while.

I hope they pull all the broken buildings down and put some grass in until we're ready to build again.

They should future proof it like Japan does. Put the buildings on rollers and springy sort of things so that when quakes hit the building shifts and doesnt take much damage, and the buildings are designed to sway and twist a bit for minimal damage. Implement this technology while we have the chance.

Or we just build more single level tilt slab buildings that didn't fall down rather than these massive tall things that have stairs that fail.

Sure in Wellington where you have a lack of land you have to think "go up", but we don't have a lack of land here. There's bucket loads of land around the city that has nothing on it that we could just put sensible buildings on.

They're called base isolators, and they've been fitted to the old parliament buildings as well as Te Papa in Wellington. Ironically I think the technology was championed by Skellerup which happens to be an iconic Christchurch company.

There has been so much wrong and misinformation out there that I would believe the latest information out there.

I wonder how many companies will reopen again in the CBD or will they move to the suburban malls?? Some I suspect will not open again or relocate to another town..

I'm picking, long term, that it will be an opportunity for the likes of Westfields to bring a mall into the CBD. Currently there's a major lack of decent malls - and lets face it, that's what draws punters.
There were some great niche shopping areas springing up (High St. for fashion boutiques, ditto Victoria St.) - but they were too few and far between. The likes of Colombo and Manchester were full of old, run down businesses too, with, of course, some exceptions.
While I think the CBD was improving, it needed a shot in the arm - and while this is NOT how anyone wanted to see it happen, it is an opportunity that could be grasped out of the current adversity.

The CCC plan does not want 'big box' malls in the inner city. The likes of westfields have been wanting to build in there for years aiui. Who knows if things will change now?
