It obviously closer to WWII Siege of Leningrad than Rorke's Drift.

These guys are heroes.

It's hard to find out how much Wanganui players get, but Rugby Southland pays a $1.3m player salary mark. (Rugby Southland received a 1.5 million rescue package)

At those paltry salaries, it obviously about the love of the game and not the cash.

Journalist who did zero research has been totally own3d by his own story. If you look at virtually every example he's used to claim that NZers are being ripped off, it actually shows we're paying the same prices as Australia. He's forgotten to add both the extra 5% GST for New Zealand, and factor in the 10% duty on clothing in NZ vs the 5% duty charged in Australia (which in itself does get slightly complex as free trade agreements do exist for some things).

Actually, *all* kinetic energy is lost. Lots of heat and noise. But most of the energy is absorbed by deforming metal (and a bit by human body parts).

Was being reduced from much higher levels over an extended timeframe, so that any remaining local manufacturers would have time to adjust their business model to enable them to survive against imported competition from countries where as the story goes, typically very poorly paid child labourers work long hours in unsafe factories to make shoes, clothes etc.

"Reasonable" is subjective, arguable, and swayed by economic ideology.

It is really hard to know how specific clothing is produced unless the manufacturer has a verifiable fair trade label. But I feel very uncomfortable wearing something that might have been made by an impoverished exploited worker in a fire trap building, or worse, an enslaved child. I am happy to pay an extra 10% to avoid that.

The fact that you pay an extra 10% does no such thing. Any clothes or shoes, regardless of where they come from outside NZ or how/where they are made, would attract the duty. This would include (for example) hand made shoes from Lobbs in London or bespoke suits from Gieves where none of your concerns are to be found, you may be assured!

You could theoretically save the 10% by buying NZ made but that clearly isn't feasible in all things, since some (most, probably) clothing and shoe needs are not made here at all and clothing and shoes are driven by fashion.

I suppose you have a point but I would imagine that very few people in this country do their shopping at the establishments you mention. They are far more likely to be rummaging through the bargain rack at the Warehouse.
