Handle9: So your real complaint Is you need better mates?

I was a bit puzzled about this response but then realised that some people were misinterpreting what I was saying: It's not that a (say) vegetarian will say "I'm a vegetarian and so everyone else should be as well", it's that if people know that someone is vegetarian they feel obliged to accommodate them, and the person who's being accommodated never thinks of saying "you know what, I appreciate the gesture but have a day off and eat whatever you want today".

Again, as a long-time vegetarian, I have never experienced that situation. Usually I just get served what everyone else gets, only minus the meat. If that doesn't leave much, I deal with it. This has never created a problem for the host or other guests.

Nope, didn't misinterpret it at all.

Nor do I radiate moral superiority at carnivores. We all live in mutually tolerant harmony. You should give that a try.

That’s great - but you do radiate moral superiority at people who drink alcohol.

Geektastic: The amount of vegetarian and vegan friendly things I have to eat as things are changed to suit a minority. Even Rowntrees fruit pastilles now proudly stated they are vegan friendly.

I’m not vegan. I don’t want to eat vegan things any more than they want to eat meat. Will we see “vegan sausages - now carnivore friendly!”? No. So why must normal people be made to eat vegetarian stuff?!

You don't 'have' to eat anything. You can choose to eat whatever you like. If you like something, what difference does it make what  label is put on it? If you don't like it, why the hell are you eating it?

To use the example I mentioned, I’ve eaten Rowntrees fruit pastilles since I was a small child. I like them.

They changed the recipe to make it nice for v/v but spoiled the taste and texture in doing so. So it’s not merely a label question.

By all means make a version that’s v/v friendly. We do not all have to eat gluten free bread for example. But don’t mess with established products just to fit in with the latest virtue signalling trend.

Without evidence, I suspect they changed the recipe to make it cheaper to produce. A side effect was they could also market it as v/v friendly.

What you are saying is you don't like the way the manufacturer changed the recipe. They do this all the time. Don't blame it on vegetarians.

@Rikkitic

"Anyone who did not see Paddy Gower's raw and painfully honest booze special last night needs to do so. His courage in presenting this personal warts and all account should be applauded. For anyone who is interested (and everyone should be), a follow-up discussion of the issues presented is on TV3 at 8.30 pm tonight."

As I said previously, who are you to tell me what I need to do, watch I should watch and what I should be interested in?

Not trying to start a fight - TBH I like you on GZ and I think we have things in common - but this post annoyed me because it came across as arrogant and superior.

I think that calling these "telling me what to do" is being a little over-sensitive - they're common ways of expressing a strong recommendation.

I'd hope that if someone said "You really need to check out this new restaurant," your first reaction would not be "You can't tell me what to do."

Sometimes, I suspect they remove the animal ingredient because in the day of social media, it's easy for unfavourable information to get around.

You know, "You won't believe which part of a cow's rectum they use to make these pastilles !"

I'm sorry it came across that way. It certainly wasn't the intention. I was very impressed by Gower's no holds barred documentary and I was strongly recommending it. That is something people do here. I thought it was important.

That is how I read it too. I think I would have worded it similarly.

If only we had panels that could turn radiated moral superiority into electricity, we would solve the world's energy problems. Probably you could run a car with just a vegan or teetotaler strapped to the bonnet.
