'The Hangover Part 3' last night. It was ok, not as good as the last two.

Would give it a 5/10

Just watched Shutter island for the first time. Thought I was doing al right until the ending(got completely lost), might have to book another night in to watch again and get my head around it. Anyone else feel the same way?

Read the book it will explain a lot of things the film couldn't. I love Dennis Lehane as a writer but i have been disappointed with all the film adaptations of his books. They just dont have the impact his books do

Black Book 8.5/10

I watched this on the suggestion of a fellow Verhoeven fan on Geekzone, and it was a good recommendation. I really enjoyed this film. It's got some of Verhoeven's trademarks peppered throughout - nudity, graphic violence, dry humour - but it doesn't overshadow an engrossing story about a young Jewish woman who lurches from tragedy to tragedy as she becomes embroiled with the Dutch resistance during World War 2. I was surprised to find the lead actress - Carice van Houten - has also turned up in another of my faves (Game of Thrones' Melisandre, where she is equally uninhibited about clothing). The film is paced well - there are a couple of places where you think the film is drawing to a close, when it throws up another small twist that brings you back into the story. The titular "Black Book", in particular, had me wondering about its significance as the movie progressed, but it does a good job of building up the layers of knowledge so that when the twist is revealed, it makes sense. Overall, a highly recommended film.

House of Cards (1990 version) - 9/10

Not strictly a movie, but a four-part mini-series which I think qualifies as a film. I recall vaguely my dad watched this when it was broadcast in the 90s, and that it was good, but I never watched it at the time. Years later, I thought I should probably watch it but couldn't find it. However, it was recently added to Quickflix (including both follow-up mini-series), so I sat down to watch it. And it's brilliant.

It's dated, of course. Despite the 1990 release date, it still has a 1970s/80s feel to it. Watching it, it's hard to believe that the information revolution is only years from kicking off. But putting that aside, the story is a cracker. Ian Richardson plays Francis Urquart, the Chief Whip of the Conservative Party in Britain, grappling with the leadership of the party after Margaret Thatcher's reign ends. Urquart is an ambitious politician who is overlooked for promotion because of his value as the Party's enforcer. And he certainly plays that role well, with a carefully controlled maelvolence which is easily mistaken for fatherly care. Many of the minor MPs who face his admonition seem to value the drubbing they receive, in a kind of masochistic way. The core of the story revolves around Urquart's play for power, via a Machiavellian orchestration of events designed to eliminate his opposition. Over the course of four 60 minute episodes, the depths of his talents for manipulation grow, and it's quite startling to see how far he is prepared to go to get what he wants. The other cast members are great - in particular, Susannah Harker gives a creepy performance (if you've seen it, you'll know what I mean) as the investigative journalist who gets entangled with Urquart.

If you're interested in British political thrillers, then this is definitely one worth checking out. I put it in the same class as State of Play (the original British version with John Simm, not the film version with Russell Crowe), so if you enjoyed that you'll probably enjoy this. I've heard that an America version of House of Cards has been made, starring Kevin Spacey. I think I may have to get my hands on that, especially after seeing Margin Call recently...

Nope.

It sucked the first time, subsequent viewings just made it worse.

Rates with The Departed as a one of Scorsese's weakest efforts.

Agora = 7/10 really interesting but very sad. It would have been nice to know by way of a short intro whether this was based on any true event. It is classed as Historical Fiction so that makes it a little clearer; need to do some more reading now.

X Men First Class 8/10 This one was a good one. I liked how it took you back to the start when thery were young. Kevin Bacon was excellent

Brave = 10/10 just as good the second time around.

Love Actually 9.5/10 just as good the 20th time around.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug teaser trailer 10/10. Looks great. Lots of elves and amazing CGI as always.

i really can't remember...

verhoeven can make a decent film when he puts his mind to it.

black book certainly makes up for crap like showgirls and hollow man.

Silver Linings Playbook - 3/10.

First 90 minutes bored me and the missus to tears, and the last 30 minutes was so predictable I just couldn't wait for it to be over. Not sure what all the fuss was about. I am sure the endless rambling monologues have some artistic quality but I guess I just ain't that deep.

The Great Gatsby - 6/10

Interesting story, great cinematography, some fab acting...but after it was over kinda just went 'meh'. Not a movie I would ever desire to watch again.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

Have you dealt with mental illness much? This is a genuine question, as I have found a lot of friends that didnt enjoy it have had little / no experience with people suffering from it. I deal with it a lot in my job, and the leads nailed it. It told a story of one of the most prolific medical problems in the world. There characters showed the balance of normality, [the view most people see of them every day] hinged with the irrational behavior which only the closest are privy to, if they hang around.

For those reasons I thought it was spot on. I would give it 8/10
