SLP ... as I said you need to be susceptible to rom com, not every show is everyone's cup of tea ... but the different characters all having an "issue", was tear jerking - oops

The Place Beyond The Pines

yeah loved it
multiple story lines done well
very tense
characters i gave a sh*t about - and not just eva mendes
highly recommended

The wife and I celebrated my 44th birthday with a visit to the cinema to watch my choice:
Star Trek - Into Darkness

I'd give it a solid 8/10

It's predictable (it HAD to be - it was a Star Trek movie)
It's a bit corny (it HAD to be - it was a Star Trek movie)
It was action packed (it HAD to be - it was a Star Trek movie)
It had a nice blonde girl in it (it HAD to - it was a movie)

The only issue I had was not with the movie, per se - the theatre was pretty much empty and the sounds was WAY TOO LOUD creating an ear piercing sharpness that really did cause both of the people in the theatre to cover their ears during the exciting bits.

Bloody good movie though.
I'll be buying it on iTunes.

black book certainly makes up for crap like showgirls and hollow man.

Never actually seen Showgirls but I understand it was pretty terrible. Hollow Man gave the clue in the title, but I find Kevin Bacon's hammy acting (pun most definitely intended) can be an amusing distraction sometimes.

Pretty sure I haven't commented about these films before...

Star Trek: Into Darkness - 8/10
Others have already mentioned this, so I won't go into too much detail. Suffice to say, it was a great film. Just as much fun as the "first" film (2009), maybe even more. Will be going again this week to take the mother-in-law (MIL) to see it, after we watched (for her, the first time)...

Star Trek (2009) - 8/10
Sure it's heavy with lens-flare, but I think it's becoming as much a part of the Star Trek franchise as The Shat's stilted delivery and the ubiquitous "red shirts." MIL really enjoyed it, and her only real Star Trek experience was a string of episodes from TOS when it was first broadcast. She felt that Chris Pine seemed to capture the essence of Kirk towards the end of the film.

Star Trek 2: Wrath of Kahn - 8/10
Star Trek 3: Search for Spock - 7/10
Was given these on Blu Ray for Christmas, and re-watching them having not seen them for a long time. Both great films that have stood the test of time very well. Having seen the new films recently, it's fun to see how the new films have borrowed or referenced the original films...

Fast and Furious 6 - 8/10
I was hopeful that the latest incarnation of this franchise would be entertaining, and it delivered. It's less about the "street racer" scene these days (duh! hasn't been for several films!), and is more about the characters stories. Which in some ways is a good thing. None of these stories are ever going to pick up an Oscar, but when you can take a character played by Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, or Dwayne Johnson, and give them "depth", then that's an achievement. Maybe not much depth, but at least enough depth to sustain interest. For those of us that have followed all the films in the series, it's rewarding to see how they have knitted together all the different storylines. I was quite excited with the post-credits sequence, which takes us all the way back to Tokyo Drift. Even my wife, who has been pretty ambivalent about the last few films (though F&F5 reignited interest), really enjoyed it, and is itching for the next film (which is all but guaranteed). In fact, it was so exciting, we decided to go back an re-watch...

Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift - 7/10
Not a bad film. Better than 2 Fast 2 Furious (but that's not hard), but not as good as the original. It was interesting but unsurprising that they went with a completely new cast. The action scenes were good, especially the new style of racing featured (drifting). The acting was a bit patchy, and least said about Zachary Ty Bryan, the better. Fortunately, the main actors were all pretty good, especially Sung Kang (Han).

The Underworld films are okay, but the first one was definitely the best one. None of the follow ups really did justice to the overarching storyline. The characters played by Bill Nighy and Michael Sheen always seemed more interesting than the apparent lead characters. But then both actors are usually good in anything they do...

Nah, she didn't mind it. She had got out that new Hansel and Gretel movie, and she didn't mind the violence in that, so I thought that she might like Underworld.

I agree with you about the quality; I've seen I think either 2 or 3 of them. And they definately go downhill rather quickly. I think there are about 5 of them now?
