Your mileage may vary, depending on location, time, and even how how well dressed you are.

But unless you're a American millionaire with a black American Express card (the Centurion Card) going to a private hospital, your experience at an US hospital will be full of paperwork, and credit/insurance checks, and a eye-wateringly expensive, possibly devastating, final bill.

Between 2018-2022, 53% of dead Americans had overwhelming medical bills (over 100% of annual income). In same time period, roughly 40% of dead Americans had at least some healthcare debt. All debts, including medical bills, are paid from the deceased's assets first before heirs get an inheritance. Some US states do NOT forgive the deceased debt, if broke.

I know of an American who was involved in severe head trauma car accident. Which was NZD $6 million over 18 months. Luckily his father was a white collar professional, so it was covered by the very generous work insurance.

In New Zealand, I went to emergency department three times. Each time I waited over 7 hours before seeing a doctor. There were many in the ED that could have been handled by a GP/dentist. I think a token payment, perhaps $80 would discourage abuse.

Whanganui hospital does it right:

Whanganui Accident and Medical

They have an afterhours medical service right next to the ED reception.  Fees are linked to from that page

Maybe I'm reading into that too much but that's subtly suggesting if you're suffering from depression, drink.

Yes I had to use their service a few years ago when I suddenly got numbness down my face while driving north on SH3. I thought it was a great approach to handling visits.

If I were in the US, and outside the US and New Zealand, the Coca Cola Freestyle camera is a worry, because like specific Coca-Cola machines in China do use facial recognition.

In the United States, it depends heavily on the state and sometimes the city. There is no single nationwide rule, and facial recognition for marketing in public vending machines sits in one of the most legally risky areas of U.S. privacy law.

My understanding is in New Zealand law, as of a few months ago, is the Biometric Processing Privacy Code under the Privacy Act 2020.

It applies to all organisations that uses biometric technologies like facial recognition.

Facial recognition that automatically collects and processes facial images to recognize or identify people is classed as biometric processing of biometric information. Your face is a unique physiological trait.

In many privacy laws globally, express consent is understood as requiring a clear affirmative action. This could be pressing an “I agree” button after review of terms, signing a form, or otherwise giving clear authorization. A sign wouldn't be enough.
