Geektastic: My otherwise very intelligent wife’s complete dunderheadedness with regards to navigation.

Case in point. Today we have a meeting at the PWC building in Cashel Street in Christchurch. We follow Apple Maps and get there. Park. Then have a 15 minute walk because my wife just entered “Cashel Street” with no number. She could even have entered PWC and it works.

Doh!

Who was driving?  I've found that asking "can you steer while I look up the route on google maps?" can prompt a passenger into being more helpful with the navigation

I wasn't being rude, I was courteous to him the entire time. How would you have responded if you'd sat down on a flight and the guy next to you started trying to sell QAnon, or the truth from Fox News, or the global Zionist conspiracy, to you? If you're stuck next to someone for, in this case, five solid hours, it's quite a violation of etiquette to launch into a sales pitch to them shortly after they sit down. When I worked in the US, as I was leaving, one of my co-workers gave me a videotape his church had made of the life of Jesus. The entire time I worked with him he never proselytised, never tried to push his faith on me (or anyone else), and overall everyone there never pushed any particular religion or political position on others. I really appreciated the gesture because it was obviously something he felt deeply about but, no matter how deeply he felt about it, wasn't going to try and push on anyone else.

I think you were being rude. Even if you felt they were also being rude, it hardly calls for escalating with more rudeness, especially since, as you mentioned, you need to sit beside them for an entire flight.

As to what would happen if someone sat down and started talking to me about any topic I wasn't interested in, I'd simply politely let them know I wasn't interested in the topic. It's not difficult.

"I don't think we will see eye to eye on this topic, so I'm going to put my headphones on and watch a movie" also works.

Speaking of being polite, if no-one ever tells a bore they are being boring, how can they ever be expected to improve their behaviour?

Rudeness is arrogantly assuming a stranger has the slightest interest in your own personal obsessions.

Seems like you are just trying to find justifications to be rude when it's not required.

Kind of like reflexively reciting Labour missteps every time someone criticizes the Reactionary Right.

Sorry. This thread is already a little political since it started with someone objecting to religious instruction, but I will stop now.

Boring is subjective. Interesting for one person, boring for another. One can’t know if they are boring someone with a subject that may or may not interest them without trying it out first. Most people will read the body language of the recipient and change course. Some don’t have this awareness. Lots of ways to deflect without causing hurt. Airplane buddies are difficult to escape but there are gentle ways. Writing down that you are hard of hearing is a good one for planes. You get a sympathetic look and peace.

We have a friend who manages ad nauseum to bring past wars and history into every conversation. Drives me nuts but I just tell him I’d rather not examine what’s past and change the subject...'more coffee?'

Being forced to use ANZSIC codes in one of our systems, but not being able to find the correct ANZSIC code because they haven't uploaded them all.

Makes it largely pointless.

That the "Pams" homebrand paper towels are noticeably thinner now!

They also no longer state the size of each towel on the packaging, only the number of "sheets"!

Thinner now, obviously shrinkflation to the sheet size coming!

I didnt know pams made them. I have always got the value brand ones, which inexplicably are cheaper to buy in 1 packs vs 4 packs and the 1 pack doesn't have a limit applied like the 4 pack does too.

Being boring is not behaviour that is in need of 'improving'.

I have met some very boring people - and can be one, I am told - but it is usually a simple fact of different ideas of what is interesting.

I can talk to you for hours about subjects that I personally find interesting but if you do not also find them interesting I am boring. If you do, I am knowledgeable.

That behaviour does not need improving: it is simply differing interests (combined with my inability to tell when people are getting bored).

My wife, who had entered all the mapping details (using the word in a very loose sense!) before I got in the car and assured me it was all fine..!
