LookingUp: Having lived with various cats during my first 40+ years I can't remember any of them bringing a penguin home.

Perhaps the penguin was the species that features here?

Haha - from the same site, maybe it was this cat that got the penguins?

My next door neighbor had a pet Rat. It regularly got away from their property. It would climb the trees on my section and kill chicks which obviously cut down the long term survival rate for those birds. After all if they only produced eggs once or twice a year it doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out that the bird population will soon be devastated. The other thing it would do is get into my garage where I was storing a lounge suit and tore up the fabric ruining it as well as other items. Some things were more of a nuisance value, digging up my garden, cr*pping in it. Eventually the owners would come looking for it or it'd find its way home. Really though you'd think they'd keep control of it.

Oh sorry theres a Typo. I said Rat instead of Cat. Same difference! You wouldn't let a rat wonder around the neighborhood doing those sort of things, so why do let your cat. Of course a lot of cat owners are totally selfish and just don't care!

If you are a selfish cat owner... You know who you are! The very least you could do is put a bell that works on your cats collar. This has proven to cut down on at least some of your cats destruction.

At the end of the day, I prefer cats to birds.

Any bird that cannot survive by adapting will die out other than on islands or in the zoo. That bothers me not at all to be honest.

Maybe we can get some more interesting birds in then - there is a big shortage of interesting raptors here for a start. Golden Eagles down south would be brilliant.

Out here in the countryside many of the locals shoot them if they don't have collars on.

Reminds me of when they used to give bounty for rats in the UK in the 40's and 50's. A long ago ex-girlfriend's father told me that as a boy he used to shoot rats with his airgun and take the tails to collect the bounty. They then found that the Council wallah in charge just threw the tails in a bin outside his office. They then started emptying his bin and claiming the bounty again...!

Yes, they can hunt the Fiordland Moose.

Maybe us born and bred in NZ (or call us Kiwi's if you like) much prefer our native species, which are also part of our culture to introduced pests and are very interested in keeping it that way. And some people from not around here, don't.
