But was it a racist term, or a geometric description of the bridge - it was on an angle?

BBC were right to exit him.  I'm a huge fan of both Top Gear and Jeremy Clarkson.  But, you just can't hit people at work.  The only excuse for hitting someone is to prevent harm i.e. defense of self/others.

KiwiNZ: The use of a racist term in the Bridge Special in Burma clear and obvious and disgraceful

It was, in fact, hilariously funny.

Probably not to many people of Asian ethnicity who might have been watching the show, unless there are subtle degrees of racism I don't understand. For example, Michael Richards calling someone a nigger is unacceptable, but is Paul Holmes calling someone a darkie OK?

None of them bother me in the slightest so I don't really have a stake in that game.

I've been categorised and referred to on the grounds of my race since the day I set foot in NZ and I regard that as a perfectly normal part of the human condition. My wife was turned down for a job not long after we arrived because (she found out via someone she knew at the company) the interviewing manager "didn't want yet another Pom in the team - we have too many."

We just accept it for what it is - normal human response - we don't whinge to the authorities about it.

Holmes got in trouble for that too iirc, wasn't sacked but it certainly hung around for a while like a bad smell. Paul Henry asking if Anand Satyanand was actually a Kiwi was another one that seemed to cause a right stink. One persons off the cuff cheeky comment is another's blatantly racist remark.

It was mentioned in multiple articles announcing his death, so it certainly stuck with him a very very long time, and he has been dead 5 years and it's still hanging around.

I hear on the news this morning that lots of  high up staff involved to Top Gear have  announced their departure from the program,  so i guess it's dead..

Imagine being in a situation where the colour of your skin is enough to have someone dismiss you for a job. Racism is alive and well unfortunately.

We just accept it for what it is - normal human response - we don't whinge to the authorities about it.

Yeah, everyone should be entitled to discriminate based on race, colour, religion and sexual orientation of other people? Sounds like a brilliant world.

It feels a little like you are trying to pick a fight here. I didn't interpret what he said as "I'm ok with all racism"

I think there are degrees of it and he is saying his threshold is somewhere above zero. This is HIS choice.

I'm a realist. Humans discriminate against 'otherness' and have done since they lived in caves. To pretend otherwise is to be wilfully blind to reality.

Discrimination occurs all the time, it's part of your built in safety features etc.

I am totally flabbergasted that folks are prepared to accept and defend racial and other discrimination. It is disgraceful.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

In case that was in any way directed at me, I was not saying *I* accepted it, I was defending others rights to accept if THEY are discriminated against.

But he hasn't just accepted the racism he has encountered, has he? He's also commenting on others who have objected to the racism they've experienced.

I think everyone needs to lighten up a little bit.  You're talking about a comedy show.  Half the reason it's funny is because the things they say are outside the norm, stupid, borderline offensive, or just straight up offensive.  The trick is to identify the situation and context in which said offensive content is delivered.  Some might react differently to others, like with absolutely everything in this world

Like the whole Mexican ordeal.  It was FUNNY.  Then someone said they were offended and yet another non-issue ended up in the papers.

Yah I tend to agree. The most effective way for people to say "I don't agree with this" is to turn off watching the show, if enough people do it, they will take notice. The reality is that over 50 Million people world wide watch it and aren't offended in a way that breaks the threshold for them and ultimately to my mind that is the target audience.
