Celebrating Christmas with a family who lost a teenager in an accident a couple of years ago (during the holiday period). You can tell it has absolutely broken the spirits of the the grandparents. The parents are surviving for their remaining children, who in turn have lost a dear sibling.

They are going to suffer every year for the rest of their lives and there's nothing I or anyone else can do or say to help them.

Yeah, it's not been a great Christmas for us this year. Adult son took his life a few months ago. While we could share in the joy of young grandchildren at Christmas time, there was always the underlying feeling that our son/their uncle was not there and never would be again.

These are incredibly sad things to have to deal with. I am so sorry for both of you and everyone touched by this. Long ago I also lost someone I loved very much under tragic circumstances. The grief never does really go away though it becomes something else with the passage of time. I hope things become better for you in the future.

Reading the above brought some perspective into my very petty annoyances. There is no worse emotion than dealing with grief especially at family times when the loved one is missing. I wish everyone peace.

That my wife has Covid 19 because someone visited us that had tested positive for covid and did not tell us. My wife is a vulnerable person due to a chronic illness, so far she is doing ok but her O2 is dropping. I have so far tested negative so fingers crossed. It really angers me that someone could be so recklessly selfish to put the lives of two vulnerable people at risk.

Sorry to hear that Mike. If the last 3 years have taught us anything, it’s that people who are unwell with anything communicable shouldn’t be visiting vulnerable people.

We have an elderly relative that ended up in hospital after catching a stomach bug. She subsequently caught Covid while in hospital. Luckily she recovered from both.

Call Healthline for some advice. Most people that get it are over the worst in a week, so remind yourself that this too will pass.
As for low oxygen levels, when you stick the meter on your finger it’s good to leave it on for a bit as the first reading is often low and a shock, but then climbs to a better level. I had 87 a few times and panicked but then it slowly climbed.

NZ Roads.

After a couple of trips to the USA, I thought their roads were awesome.

Now I've come back from a trip to Perth, and their roads are equally awesome.

Then I did a trip up to New Plymouth via SH3, and I've come to the conclusion that in fact our roads are terrible.

Why do we have such disastrously bad roads in NZ?

WA has a population of about 2.8M, GDP NZ$480B, and total roads of 147,626km (plus some parks & wildlife ones). NZ has 5.2M population, GDP NZ$228B, and total roads of 97,231km

In addition, Perth is not dissimilar to Auckland, popn 2.2M vs 1.5M, growing fast, urban sprawl, but Perth has a functional (trains on 5 or 6 lines go about every 20 minutes, and connect effectively with buses) public transport system that is widely used. It even has a railway station at the airport. Well, they call it the Airport station, but it's a mighty long walk dragging your bags to the station, and consequently? seemed not to be used much. Roading improvement work is visible all around Perth.

Out in the countryside, any road with significant traffic is 4 lanes, and there are lots of motorways with median and emergency lane, 110kph speed limit, and on- and off-ramps. It appears that there's an excellent road within a couple of dozen kilometres from any cockie's front gate. Trucks above 12T and buses above 5T are limited to 100kph.

Admittedly WA's income is more than twice as big as NZ's (thanks to mining, I guess), but it also has about 50% more roads, most of them only driven on by the local cockies and postie.

But NZTA have

  • just finished a 2-lane bridge on SH1 at Foxton
  • coned off multiple passing lanes on SH1
  • has multiple roundabouts on SH2 between Napier and Hastings
  • is adding a roundabout in SH1 at Ohakea
  • routed the new Manawatu saddle road traffic through Woodville
  • is reducing speed limits on parts of SH2 to 80kph
  • 90kph speed limit on vehicles over 3.5T

It's like they're deliberately making it difficult to use NZ roads.

Twice the income, means considerably greater tax take.  Makes a big difference to infrastructure spending.

This year (yes, 2024) one family member nearly died of sepsis and another will be dead of cancer in a matter of days to weeks. Don't tell me "happy new year".

That sounds like a terrible start to 2024. Sorry to hear it.

Thanks and yeah - does seriously give one pause as to how the rest of the year will play out. What a time to give up drinking too!
