If they start building malls in the center of the city, instead of rebuilding it as a modern interpretation of what Christchurch stands for then I'm out of here..

"Hey tourist's, we have a mall you can walk to from your hotel, it's right next to the art gallery."

YUCK!!!! Frown

What is (re)built will be a far cry from what was there now. I suspect it is likely to be opened up a lot more, but there will also be some tall buildings and malls. I could be wrong, but the most economic way to build is to build big.

[I could be wrong, but the most economic way to build is to build big.]

They wont be big, they will be low rise. Earthquake proof high rise may be viable, but you will not get them filled. This made Sept 4 seem like a minor quake. It was violent.

I am hoping that there will be smartly built low rise office areas, perhaps the lower property values (supply and demand) will allow that. I dearly hope that we can find ways to add back the character. There are 50,000 of us in CBD, they need to rebuild so the population feels safe. Being outside where there are no old facades will help so much, being inside a building that is strong and not heavy will be a great help.

re Countdown on fire, it was Colombo St, it is a block away from me. Gas leak from gas bakers ovens that start before the staff start, and an electric fault.

Cheers

I have the impression you tried to use sarcasm, which is fine, I just don't understand why would it be needed... Each company does what they know best. There are other places where TelstraClear services are working, so those other people can take advantage of this offer anyway.

If anyone in Christchurch needs Collocation, a Virtual Machine, or even something basic like a site explaining your current status let me know, we might be able to help.

Contact Unleash on 0800 750 250 to discuss options, we are currently running on Generator Power but are still going strong. Our Datacentre is manned 24hrs a day at the moment for support plus our building is unaffected by the Earthquake.

Fair enough, maybe I'm just a bit over this all. For our suburb, this is a repeat of the september one where we have to wait quite a while for power, water and sewers to be restored, as well as Telstra services.

I'd rather they just put a hold on any billing until we can actually use their services. Appologies for the sarcasm, but it is a bit funny that they only took away the portaloos from our street 2 weeks ago. They are now slowly coming back...

My thoughts are with those that have lost someone...

Unfortunately for you, the reality is that some parts of the city are far easier to get services restored to than others (plus the effort vs. population game), and you obviously live in a part of the city where it is more difficult.

Ultimately the only answer, to completely avoid this in the future, is to move. Frown

I feel for all you guys who are still without basic services. It can't be nice.

Westfield Riccarton will be re-opening tomorrow. The Hub Hornby brought in several bus loads of people from the welfare centres to The Hub today and gave each of them $100 in mall and $10 in pak n save vouchers. You can't fault them for their community spirit!
