I would love to set this up in our flat as a NAS, i am not in need of this as much as i see some people are!!! but it does fall into my i want bracket but cant afford :(
I'm helping out at my kid's school with an IT upgrade. At the moment I'm using an old desktop to test VMs... the HP microserver would be a huge improvement.
I have an Action Pack copy of SBS2008, which I would love to install in my workshop for us all to have a play with and learn to configure better. This would be a great reason to do this. Also, we need some nifty network storage.
Awesome to see some authentic brick-modified EQ servers on here. Here's mine (no bricks were involved though):
Toshiba 30CDT, most of keyboard doesn't work, the power jack is hairtriggered, and as the battery doesn't last more than 30 secs, when the internet stops, you know you had an earthquake. I've been doing informal tech support for the neighbourhood since the quakes so I'd be a bit embarrassed if anyone local saw my closet server setup. Since Feb 22 we have been denied new connections to ADSL (citing damaged cabinets in the CBD) and although TelstraClear's HQ is 30secs walk around the corner, their cable doesn't come closer than 20m to my house. For these reasons we are forced to use 3G, which is fast but super expensive - youtube does not exist for us anymore!
I'd love to get something I can connect my printer, and external drives to (the toshiba only has 1 USB 1.1 port, which is taken up with the 3G modem)
here she is: the side orientation improves heat dissipation (sharing internet is a hard job for this wee beasty) and also proves more resilient to aftershocks.
Here's the current setup ... working nicely and very robust, but getting long overdue for upgrade.
I've got 3 Mini ITX EPIA MII's doing all the work (in order top to bottom):
File Server (Internal LAN)
Firewall
Web/Net Services (DMZ)
Winning a HP Proliant Microserver to replace this setup would be awesome! I'd switch everything over to using VMWare ESXi (adding memory), and virtualize all 3 servers into one better, faster and robust small box. It would reduce power usage and increase capacity & capabilities!
Even if it doesn't change how much physical space it uses ... by much!
This server would be just the ticket at home. At the moment I have only one "server", which is first and foremost, a mid-range gaming machine. It makes no sense to leave it on all the time just to serve the various portable devices around the home, because it uses too much power and makes too much noise. And I don't need other users helping themselves to my CPU cycles while I'm slaying zombies!
Currently use my debian desktop as a server (proxy/filter, NX, data storage, media streaming) - would be nice to be greenerand have a lower power consumption unit running all this - might not even need a workstation then - just use tablets & netbooks!
I would love this for home to set up a media server so that the flatmates can access media when my pc is turned off rather than using it as a media server and only being able to use it on my terms. I'd put a picture up but we don't have a media server currently, it's just my desktop pc in a plain black box case.
Have a Netgear Stora NAS at home. It does the job but its just a big pool of storage. The HP looks like it would be a great home server so storage and server functionality.
Best regards, Aaron Davidson.
