Handsomedan:

This

So sick of kids beating other kids up brutally.

I grew up in the 70's. We had scraps. It's not a new thing. It's the way they are doing this that sickens me.

Video it. Make it truly brutal. Gang up on some less capable or physical kids.

It's so wrong and it really gets me.

So what in the environment of those girls makes them think something like this is a good idea, or even acceptable? Where did they learn that beating up on someone weaker is a fun thing to do?

I mentioned somewhere else that I believe the drop in social standards comes from trying to do things on the cheap. No-one wants to pay the cost of maintaining and enforcing standards. Local police stations have been closed to save money. Cops walking a beat and even frequent patrols in cars have been cut back for the same reason. Schools are overcrowded and under-resourced and teachers with the right qualifications are not paid enough. All of the rot comes back to lack of money.

What to do about children like this? A good start would be to remove all access to social media, with restricted devices provided in school for educational purposes only. Actions need to have consequences. If necessary, money must be found to ensure that punishments are actually enforced. No social media means no social media, even if that requires a full-time minder!

I couldn’t look at it. Horrible and cruel. Might it be that kids today are exposed to so much violence and cruelty on TV and streaming that it has become normalised? Public shaming may point out that it’s unacceptable behaviour to others of the same ilk.

I do wonder that, myself...then I worry that I might just be a bit of a boomer and out of touch with reality...

Some of the kids* at work were talking about their favourite serial killers this morning...

*Actually they're mostly in their late 30s/early 40s but apparently have more free time to watch TV than I do!

Worth a yarn with someone? Or a vent in the mental health thread perhaps?

That's the problem, I don't know.

There's a mental health thread?

It was normal enough back in my school.... mainly the Maori kids would fight each other, and pick on certain white kids too. The girls could be more vicious than the boys .  Everyone was scared of this one girl,  she would punch you in the face just for looking at her. No hesitation.

We lived in a town with Black power... even if you went to a good primary school, you'd end up at intermediate/high school with gang kids.

It's certainly a predominantly Maori issue in my particular experience. They perpetuated most of the violence and crime at my school.  We saw fellow students breaking into the school on one occassion. One of my classmates ended up being sent to prison for murdering a court witness .

So yes, violence was reasonably common when I was at school. Back in the 80's.

There seems to be a fascination with this for some people, I know several who watch serial-killer doccos on Youtube. This includes grandmother-types so it's not a youth-of-today thing.

Come to think of it, it's all women. Maybe just a biased sample, what was the breakdown for your "kids"?

And there's so much interesting stuff on YT they could be watching instead: Woodworking videos, electronic device teardowns, engine rebuilds, armchair commentary on Ukrainian military tactics, rusty workshop equipment restoration... why would anyone watch boring murder documentaries instead?
