Handsomedan:

Every now and again you'd hear an explosion in the staff room and upon investigation, you'd find shattered brown glass everywhere, from where a cup had spontaneously exploded - for no apparent reason.

Rubbish US-made "Pyrex" cookware will do that too. In Europe it's still borosilicate glass which was what Pyrex originally was, in the US it's been replaced by cheap tempered glass which will shatter/explode spectacularly when it feels like it.

So if you want quality, avoid the line that has "Made in USA" on it. Or more generally look for an explicit mention of borosilicate glass.

Oh no! I just got some starwars and hello kitty pyrex from costco not knowing that. Guess if it breaks I will use the return policy with a bag of broken bits then.

It's not exploding left, right, and center, it's just not what you think you're getting.

According to the one piece of glass remaining from my shower door - the fixed overlap at the hinge end - the glass was manufactured by XingFu Glass (which their web site tells me is in the international picturesque garden city of Changshu, Taiwan), but meets Standard AS/NZS 2208. Unfortunately I can't tell you what's in that standard because it would cost me $100.80 to purchase it 🙃

That's just the testing standard, what you actually need is NZ 42something to tell you what the markings mean. Just had a look at the one here and through all the soap scum it looks like it's marked TFAS, T = toughened/tempered, A = impact resistance grade A (or it might be Annealed)... you're best off looking at the UK standards since they're more readily available than the NZ ones.

Totally stoopid that there's a legal requirement to put a marking on there that's effectively impossible to interpret for anyone looking at it. They may as well just mandate engraving 𓀌 on each pane for all the utility it has.

That is good to know - my Ooni Pizza Oven has a borosilicate glass panel on the door. I assume it's because you really want the good stuff at 400 degrees celcius.

@PeterReader is very rarely participating in conversations. Most of its replies are automatic and in response to a word or set of words and it can vary depending on the sub-forum.

PeterReader.

Interesting and ironic that that the first response to the OP on this thread, nearly seven years ago, was this:

Had a closer look this morning and realised I can also see the following:

Grade A TF 5 - which appears to mean it is grade A safety glass. Unclear about the 5

CSI 7075 PAS-Mark - something to do with pool fencing? No idea really.

Ah, yeah, the 'S' on ours could be a '5' under the gunk. One of the European standards has something like a shatter scale that goes from 1 to something, but grade 1 is the best so I doubt they'd be claiming a 5 for this.

Overall still about as useful as engraving a giant '𓀌' on it.

Taking a bunch of photos on my iPhone to upload to a website - and finding that the phone is set on HEIC but the site accepts only JPEG. Then having to faff around finding out how to convert one to the other.
