The situation could be improved with standardised colours for the plugs (remember when mice always had green plugs and keyboards always had purple?) but it's trickier when many of the plugs are just HDMI outputs. You'd need some sort of system like "red is for a satellite receiver, blue is for a game console, green is for speakers" but good luck getting the industry to agree on all that!

No, I have always been a Mac user.

Like USB ?

If it was not for Apple pushing that you would still be using your DIN connectors

Or GUIs, dos was fine...right ?

Firewire was far superior to USB (and still is), for a start it was bi directional as well as much faster.

Likewise Lightening was far superior to the alternatives.

And the new USB variations by the USB committee are an abomination

The fact that you throw a book floppy into any connected disk drive and it would boot, or you could eject floppies from 2 drives, swap them and they would continue as normal.

Lets not even get into all the variations of small USB connectors various phone used along with all the varieties of video out plug "standards" laptops/desktops have.

The utter evils of Coaxial ethernet.

All those pay for upgrades in the OS as well as the 101 variations in them.

Shall we mention Vista ?

Yeah... no thanks. I have high standards :-)

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

For me, yes I like what I like, to me Windows is like trying to play golf with a left hand set of golf clubs, where as I am right handed. Left handed people feel the opposite.

At work I will recommend Linux, Windows, Mac as appropriate, they are tools and get treated as such. I don't tell a woodworker to buy a metal lathe because thats what I have...

right tool for the right job, and how do I make this person the most productive.

I still play with my CPM machines (Osbourne 1, Kaypro 4, Kaypro 10, etc etc etc as well as my TRS-80s)

My comment was more about PCs needing to colour code their IO ports rather than make them auto detect and simply used the right driver at that point. Mac like PCs now do for USB.

Another annoyance of mine: I too have high standards. I've been using Macs for twenty years, but I have no idea what my next computer is going to be thanks to Apple's recent trend of putting out absolute rubbish lately. But Microsoft's no better!

I am running Ventura on my Mac Mini at work (I am the guinea pig), but there is no way I will be putting it on any of the machines I personally own.

The new "System prefs" is an abomination.

I am looking at Raspberry Pi units to replace my 2 aging Mac Mini servers (2009/2011)

As I am looking at Linux I may also get an Intel NUC for linux to play with, Diptrace runs on Linux so that will be a way to play while doing something useful.

90% of the software I use is 3rd party, bought independently and not off the store.

The inability to access the IOS store via my Mac has meant I have stopped buying IOS software, its too hard on an iPhone/iPad for me to bother with.

iTunes has become a mess and keeps pushing for subscription services which I am not interested in.

The only subscription I do have with Apple is for iCloud, but its because I can host the email for my personal domain there, its was easy to set up.

I've tried Linux a few times over the years and it doesn't take me long to get scared off by the bugs. Just the other day I installed Ubuntu and then clicked the prominent Firefox icon. This resulted in "Loading Firefox" (or something to that effect) in the top bar for several seconds, followed by that message going away. At no point did I get an error message, and at no point did Firefox actually open.

My previous attempt was Mint a couple of years ago, with which I quickly discovered that the "Shut Down" option would reboot the system instead of shutting it down.

The way companies can debit your card in milli-seconds but it takes them up to 2 weeks to 'process' a refund.

It's not that surprising, the system is highly tuned for forward flow, just Visa's payment processing system alone is designed to handle 50,000 transactions a second with the clearing process across multiple parties being hugely complex. Reversals are a one-in-a-million occurrence that go against the flow, it's understandable (if frustrating) that unwinding a transaction can take awhile.

All of the house ethernet cables - same problem as HDMI - have zip-tie tags with labels written on them, you can get them from Ali for next to nothing. They're a lifesaver when it comes to moving things around.

Articles with critical information right at the bottom, almost as an afterthought. I wondered whether I could play a particular game in Japanese, and I found an article that enthusiastically tells me that yes, I can. It says that although there are no language options inside the game itself, if I was to change the system language of my PlayStation then it'll run in Japanese. It has full step-by-step instructions, including screenshots, showing how to do this.

And then, it ends with "note that you'll need an Asian copy of the game, as Western releases lack the Japanese language files".

Firing up the BNZ app to hunt down a missing payment and being told it's been deactivated because we felt like it and I'll have to go through the whole signup and activation process again.

And now because it's a brand-new app install that I've apparently never used before despite using it for several years, its functionality has been restricted for security reasons.

Edited to add: Just checked the app store and it was updated yesterday so presumably they broke something in the update. Would have been nice if they told you that due to an update you may need to re-register rather than just "Your account has been deactivated" or whatever the message was.

Is this in the wrong thread as it made me smile thinking of you all flying home for Xmas tomorrow, let’s hope Customs doesn’t unwrap those presents.

Fly safe and I hope the reunion is as good as what everyone dreamed it would be.
