The complete lack of "polish" in Windows. I clicked the clock to display the calendar. One second later Windows decides to pop a notification up over the top of it, so that I can't see the thing I'm trying to look at.

It was Steve Jobs who said

""The only problem with Microsoft is they just have no taste. They have absolutely no taste. And I don't mean that in a small way, I mean that in a big way, in the sense that they don't think of original ideas, and they don't bring much culture into their products.""

But I do also find Apple can do the same dumb things.

The stupidest thing I have ever come across is Apples bluetooth mouse, you can NOT charge it and use it because the connector is on the bottom...DUH

Geektastic: That the Mitsubishi heat pump I ordered in August is STILL not available and that delivery has been end of September then end of October then end of December then end of January and I’ve just been informed it’s now the end of February!!

Looks like I’ll be changing brands.

That's almost an identical timeline to me. Ordered August last year just prior to lockdown. The final bit arrived the week before Christmas and installed end of January I think.

Problem was I only wanted Mitsubishi, in a certain colour and model.

Edit. Went back and checked my emails. Ordered mid October. Installed mid January. But I was kept updated, it wasn't the installer's fault.

Yes similar. We want the red Black Diamond Hypercore model. You’d think it was made of actual diamonds. From space rocks. Sheesh.

The endless dithering at Neb family dinners. Dinner was about to be served, with food on the table, and then the traditional game of "lets see how long we can put off actually starting dinner while the food gets cold in front of us" started. Just over twenty minutes later we finally got from "dinner about to be served" to "dinner actually served".

At least no-one had to complain about the food being hot or anything.

That reminds me: People who seem to be incapable of shutting up. I was at an event yesterday and the crowd was talking at full volume. A speaker got up on stage and had to wait around two minutes for everyone to stop talking, because when someone's up on stage it's polite to... continue yakking to your neighbour?

Then when she said "now X is going to say a few words" and there was maybe 5 seconds as she left the podium and he took it, people started talking to each other again. Shut up and listen to the people you came here to see!

Likewise the Wi-wo smart plugs... they have a single button which incorporates an LED. To reset it, you have to press the button until the LED rapidly flashes red. Except, the totally freeking obvious... you can't see the LED when your finger is on the button. Does no-one actually test these things out?

More and more and more and..... stories like this:

Some quotes:

"The man’s daughter arrived at his house during the ruse and realised he’d been duped, shutting down his computer and disconnecting his phone.

Undeterred, the scammers tried ringing the man more than 60 times over the next two hours, eager to fleece him for every last possible cent."

"The family immediately contacted the banks to have his accounts frozen and credit cards cancelled before reporting the fraud to police, and blocking those Prezzy Cards that were yet to be cashed in by the thieves.

But four months on, the family is frustrated with the lack of police progress due to a backlog of cases, despite the family identifying the service stations where the Prezzy Cards were purchased and tracking down CCTV footage of the offenders.

And while the banks have now refunded most of the stolen money, the family claims Westpac dragged the chain. The bank eventually apologised for the delay, saying its fraud team was “absolutely snowed” with similar cases of online crime."

"However, despite the incident occurring in August, he was told last month police were yet to assign the case and were unlikely to do so given the number of fraud cases and a lack of resources."

I’ve been in New Zealand 6 days. 5 days of rain and it’s freezing now we’re in the south island. The MIL has got the fire going.

This kind of thing incenses me. Why the hell are the police not given enough resources to deal with this crap? Not to mention ram raiders and vicious dairy invaders. Are they all too busy ripping up harmless vegetables?

The banks should be nailed to a wall of shame. They are making enough obscene profit here to ship overseas to spare a little for redress and improved common sense security measures. They are hanging us out to dry and they need to be made accountable.

I've seen this from both sides when I worked in the bank. I feel sympathetic for those who are maybe older and not so tech savvy. I recall being in a branch and a colleague was "pinning" an elderly women's eftpos card. She would forget her pin, put the wrong one in three times and the ATM outside would eat her card. So she was often getting new ones, or she struggled to see the keypad so would ask the person behind her to get the cash out for her.

Anyway, he'd reset the pin, ask her to enter the new one, and she would announce out loud as she entered, and my poor colleague would be blocking his ears, saying, no don't say it out loud.

Eventually they took the card off her and she was quite happy to come in each week and get cash out.

But you put in place these protocols to cover a minority and it impacts far more people. It's like the Anti Money Laundering compliance that many of us have to observe, the behaviour of a few means we have these rules in place which make it inconvenient for everyone else.

So here we have someone with an increasingly rare product (landline), who has allowed someone access to their bank accounts, which is against virtually every banking rule. Now I know that's not fair, but I've never owned a cheque book and haven't had a landline for at least a decade but I'm not sure what the answer is. The bank can hardly turn round to anyone over a certain age and say, no online banking for you.

I have never heard of a bank here actually losing money, so my sympathy for them is limited. I have also never heard that closing all branches in small towns and getting rid of cheques was done to improve service for customers. Banks are sharks and they act like it.

I can see that. I still work in finance, and the numbers can be mind boggling. But it's probably better to look at things like profit in percentages rather than absolute dollar values. As for closing branches, again, I didn't even step in one to buy my first house, they've become like video stores, redundant really.

But again, I had to talk my father through attaching a document to an email on the phone yesterday. But he's embraced internet banking after resisting for a long time. I assume ditching cheques were for fraud reasons and the handling cost.

Ditching cheques means that I no longer had to explain to people at work that they couldn't use them unless they were a customer with an account. Had one person go "so you expect me to carry thousands in cash with me?" and I answered "no, I expect you to use the eftpos machine like everyone else does"

Putting this small thing here because I cant remember if I have already put it and I am spending this humid crap weather inside doing digital housekeeping on the media collections.

People who put the disc number in the album tag on music files.

People who number tracks on multi disc albums starting at 1 on for each disc and set the total tracks field to how many tracks were on that disc.

People who set the album artist field to be the track artist on compilation albums.

That one seems to be almost universal.
