That I have a hard time remembering events during the hot COVID19/Corona virus phase. 😉 I always have to think exactly when something happened during that period. There is not much that you can attach your experiences to within your own four walls, except for the gatherings with friends and family (respecting the rules that apply in each case).

- NET: FTTH, OPNsense, 10G backbone, GWN APs, ipPBX
- SRV: 12 RU HA server cluster, 0.1 PB storage on premise
- IoT:   thread, zigbee, tasmota, BidCoS, LoRa, WX suite, IR
- 3D:    two 3D printers, 3D scanner, CNC router, laser cutter

That's OK, lots of people have trouble remembering events after Coronas. Or Steinlagers. Or Monteiths. Or any beers except American ones actually, where most of what you remember is having to visit the gents' a lot.

Handle9: I’ve been in New Zealand 6 days. 5 days of rain and it’s freezing now we’re in the south island. The MIL has got the fire going.

That's what you get for living / staying on the top of Mount Cook 🙃

Unfortunately real summer starts in February as soon as schools go back.

My lot were trimming the Christmas tree last night and the young one from Oz put the TV on with a fireplace on a loop because it was drizzling outside.

Generalisations about industries and businesses.

It's frustrating to hear the old tropes "banks are evil" "lawyers are scum" "police are all crooked".

I'm a banker. I have been in and about the banking industry at an institutional level for over 25 years. I'm not evil. Neither are many of my colleagues.

I've got friends that are lawyers - they're also not scum. They do conveyancing and contract law - about the most boring thing in the world, but they're a long way from scum.

Yes - certain industries make a lot of money, or have poor reputations for specific things - like banks closing branches because they're no longer economically viable to keep open, or lawyers defending rapists and gang members who allegedly sell drugs etc. But do we have to keep rolling out the old tropes about these institutions, which are ostensibly large employers and filled with normal, honest and hard-working (often over-worked) people?

And exactly the same happens around generalisation of demographic groups ie Boomers, UTE drivers etc

Add "lazy govt workers" to that.  We are so far from the Gliding On days but the general public still clings to that trope.

Govt depts have been pared back to far below workable staffing levels over years of various Governments demanding "do more with less".  And also, how dare any govt dept even think about compensating their staff fairly.  Somehow we are expected to have top quality staff doing phenomenal work at far below market rates because "that's my tax dollars you are wasting".

But as a Government employee, I am your boss. I pay your wages. You should do more and moan less and earn a lot less than the average wage, because I am your boss and I pay your wages. Or something.

Password expiry / reset policies.  Particularly when a password expires just before taking a holiday/break.

I just know that I'm going to struggle to remember my 'new' one when we come back next year.

This one pisses me off immensely. The idea that it’s a criminal offence for a government department to have a Christmas party paid for by the employer is crap. Then there’s the “wasteful spending” trope. Yes government departments waste money but so do all large organisations.

I pay taxes too, so does that mean I'm my own boss or self employed?

Yep, our department xmas function is pizza in the office.  And we have to pay $5 each to attend.

That's a nope from me.  I'm not paying to attend something in work time, along with the whole unrestricted gathering aspect with Covid spiking yet again.

But four months on, the family is frustrated with the lack of police progress due to a backlog of cases, despite the family identifying the service stations where the Prezzy Cards were purchased and tracking down CCTV footage of the offenders.

It's extraordinarily careless of the scammers to run the scam in the country they're in. Normally they will scam someone in a different country so that they are effectively immune from police action... the police in the victim's country can't do anything because no crime was committed in their country, and the police in the scammer's country don't care because there's no victim in their country.

This suggests to me that either

  • the scammers were either actually overseas and using mules to cash in the cards,
  • came to NZ for a couple of months to run the scam, or
  • it's a NZer who is new to the game.

Only in the last case is there any chance of the police catching them.

my one is worse than that. They changed our swipe card access to expire 28 days after last use. We finish up for a month over xmas. guess who cant get into the buildings when they get back, everyone.

They finally got some sense in then after a couple of hundred calls to get their cards reactivated, its now 60 days.
