I think they should cave to everyone, not just me. I think it's a dumb and short-sighted policy that loses them business and inconveniences shoppers. I could understand not competing with an *overseas* retailer, like Amazon, or AliExpress, but another business within NZ that holds stock in NZ?

What do they gain by the policy? I won't buy their stuff at the higher price, I'll go elsewhere.

Look, I get that, but its a race to the bottom. Imagine if supermarkets, big boy stores, girls clothing stores, etc etc and etc all went for the price match. Every store would need to be a Pak n Save or Bin Inn for their goods.

What they gain is not selling you a product at low margin, they sell it elsewhere for a better margin. No real loss

If the business you are in, went price match? Your skill, management, honesty and service means nothing, as you lose the price match with a counterpart that is poor. Then you need to pay salaries, fixed and variable costs from that.

To be fair (and not criticising your stance) If they caved into you, more will follow. Better to annoy the 2% and make hay off the other 98

Briscoes, their strategy is quite good, albeit not honest. BIG SALE, the masses flock to it. The other 13 days (between one off or annual sales), they get buyers at full price (as Briscoes is like Pak N Save) But its not

was the item on sale? if not was the item on sale in the last few weeks? likely it was, will it be on sale in the next few weeks? likely it will.

buying stuff at briscoes at full price is silly, guaranteed it will be on sale in the next month.

The coverage of the Billionaire who started a fire on his own property with fireworks. Idiots unintentionally start fires all over NZ all year long, and it doesn't make the top page of the Herald. It's only because he is a Billionaire it's getting airtime.

If there is a mechanism to sue him for the callout of the fire department, then use it and get the money, if not, then it's a failure of the authorities to build in some protections.

I see this all the time on the news. Nothing to see here, but its gets news bites. If I or you started that fire , no CNN is turning up. It's is a weird world, and I say that with seriousness. Acme Advertising Inc.

Im not sure whats worse, scrolling 7 Stuff webpages of lots of filler news, or scrolling 7 webpages of Newshub news which is  a handful if items repeated over and over.

It's a choice to pricematch.

I wasn't asking someone to change my view, just sharing their policy annoyed me.

As you say, its a choice, shop elsewhere if they wont succumb to the bottom dollar.

You did say "I think they should cave to everyone, not just me." If that occurred then the lowest price provider wins. Thats ok as long as no one complains about baseline, or lower, service and support.

No eggs on shelves. It's a staple, in a country where we have more than enough supply.

I don't mind being progressive IF it's planned and executed properly.

Too many people making 'woke' choices and the rest of us be damned.

That's great - so no need to go to Pak n Save or New World then. 😀

The Poultry Industry think it just comes down to money, they believe the supermarket chains made a late choice in 2019 to only sell barn or free range eggs based on profit margin.

Not just that muppets reckless regard for safety and the environment. The other New Year's fires were reported front page, EG Oriental Bay in Te Whanganui-a-Tara.

The industry had plenty of notice of the cessation of factory eggs which is a very good thing.

Edit, Countdown in Te Awakairangi was fully stocked with range eggs.

Yes

Started in 2012, 10 years to prepare. Not helped as some growers exited during Covid challenges. Global grain prices are up due to Ukraine, more exited. More eggs consumed in Summer. And as usual many go and get many weeks supply so that people like me find that my 2 week supply is in someone else's pantry

The change was flagged in 2012.

While Covid and the war in Ukraine may have had some effect I think largely these excuses are a smoke screen. Covid hasn't stopped milk getting onto the supermarket shelves. The war in Ukraine has increased the price of grain, but it's not the price of eggs  we're complaining about.

Free range isn't a practical option for most farmers due to the amount of land required. The other options were barn or colony. The barn system wasn't favoured and the colony system was successfully being used in other parts of the world.

The colony option was seen by many as the best compromise and many farmers went down that path or started down that path. In 2017 Labour and the Greens announced (due to pressure from more hardline/radical animal activists) that they would ban colony production. Even though they never followed through on this threat it caused a lot of uncertainty and farmers stopped going down the colony route.

Later the supermarket chains announced they wouldn't sell colony eggs.

The upshot was some farmers decided it was time to leave the industry. They didn't have the space to go free range and replacing their cage system with a colony system didn't have good long term prospects. Apparently we are down about 800,000 laying hens.

Talk about shooting ourselves in the foot.

Its a supply issue as your post alluded to. If 10 years is too short for farmers to adapt, maybe the Act or Regulation could have stated 20 years? We have been buying free range eggs at the supey for a long time, some have adapted. Some haven't. Summer is higher consumption and you then have panic buyers. I read we are down 300,000. 5 months to grow them.

10 years is plenty of time to migrate to a different system, but if many haven't made the effort, its not a quick fix. But many have.

Depends whose feet you want to shoot
