Handle9: The crappy term sales droids.

Those who treat me correctly are sale representatives. For those who don't I prefer the term 'sales monkey'.

For me it's a simpler distinction, if I know about ten times more about some random product they're selling than them, they're a droid. I've had people in stores, in response to a question I had about something, pick a product off the shelf and read the packaging to me. That's actually really annoying because it's obvious to both of us that they know nothing about the product they're selling and are just wasting their time and mine. I'm not expecting them to know everything there is to know about everything in the store, but if I can pull a random passerby off the street that can do a better job than they can then they're just functioning as droids.

Just to clarify that, I don't class everyone who works in a store as a salesdroid, just the subset that really aren't set up to be anywhere other than manning the tills.

I worked part-time in an electronics shop - small but well-stocked - to finance my studies. What I experienced there in terms of "personality variations" of customers on the other side of the counter helped me throughout my professional life from the psychological aspect of dealing with people.

- NET: FTTH, OPNsense, 10G backbone, GWN APs, ipPBX
- SRV: 12 RU HA server cluster, 0.1 PB storage on premise

Interesting question there, does any place actually put sales staff through any proper training course, or is it, as is the case for pretty much everyone I know who did this sort of work at some point, just a case of sufficiently impressing the interviewer in some way and that's all?

No, I didn't have any training and I've never sold „just anything“ to a client. My advantage was my background as a budding engineer, which is why some customers even asked for me by phone before heading into the city centre to be served by me (as mentioned, part time). Many of my circuit design sketches could be found on the back of the invoice I issued and was later built by the customer. Time of truth! When it works = happy customer, when it explodes = lost customer. But no risk, no fun! 😆

They are generally poorly paid retail staff. There will likely be some on the job training and that's about it.

I'm not defending individuals who do a crap job but the term is a crappy way to describe someone trying to make a living.

Trying to give the Sky set top box back. Used to be dead easy, take it to a 100% store job done. Now they need you to send it back in a Sky supplied  prepaid courier package. OK so I cancelled Sky TV services in November and Sky advised they would send the return package. i rang mid December as the package had not arrived, told there was a delay. OK I will wait a bit...

6 December no package so I ring Sky asked about it CSR tells me the Sky services are still active, I reply no they are stopped. CSR checks again advised I only cancelled a couple of weeks back so 30 day notice still active. No I cancelled mid November. CSR puts me through to retention team because reasons. They confirm that service is indeed stopped and advise the return package had been sen early December, I advise not received. They were adamant that I had received it. Asked did they have a signature for receipt.

After my normal calm manner I convinced them to save them and myself a lot of time and send it again, I gave them precise delivery instructions. They said that my Broadband equipment will need to be returned under seperate cover, SIGH, I am not cancelling Broadband. After a lengthy period of discussion I sorted that , I hope.

I will ring them next week after taking tranquillisers and give notice of termination of broadband services. What an exasperating company to do business with. Just thought I would let the team here know my new years good lord take me now moment and time I will never get back

So this morning I get an invoice in my inbox from Sky charging me for non return of said decoder. A fun day ahead.

Why anyone would still do business with that company I do not understand. Severing my Sky connection was like getting out of jail. I haven't looked back since. I cannot think of anything Sky could give me that I can't get (legally) from streaming.

The messaging app I use (Element) has stopped working, because... drumroll... they forgot to renew the SSL certificate.

And then I got into work today and found that one of our own customer-facing services is down because IT didn't renew the certificate. It's not my job to maintain servers/certificates, but I'm certainly going to put a reminder in my own calendar to make sure this doesn't happen again!

You are not wrong. I think there must be a medical term for it. And now once more over the top into the no mans land that is calling Sky *sigh*

We dropped Sky at the time of the change-over to the ‘new’ Sky box decoders. Our old analogue Pace decoder was WAY out of date but we liked it. I had it set up with all kinds of customisations to go with multiple device switching through the Harmony remote. By that time we were also streaming a lot and had generally had enough of Sky’s high prices, endless promos, poor content, and general attitude and manner of doing business, but we decided to keep Sky until the decoder stopped working for the few channels we actually watched, like History and Arts. We weren’t hugely bothered by the Pace resolution and hung onto it long after nearly everyone else in the country had switched.

Finally I received a call from someone at Sky wondering why we hadn’t taken advantage of their wonderful free Sky box switch-over yet. She emphasised that the decoder would soon cease working and urged us to make the change as soon as possible. I told her we had decided to drop Sky when the Pace stopped working and until then we were happy with it. She fell silent. After a few moments she said she didn’t know what to say. She was at a complete loss for words. She couldn’t find anything in her script to cover the situation. After a little more awkwardness, she thanked me for listening and we wished each other a good day. A short time later we returned the decoder. We never heard another thing from Sky.

Do they still have all the exclusive rights over most of HBO content?

Maybe not medical, but Stockholm Syndrome probably covers it.

Waiting for the meds to kick in so I can ring Sky again as call back seems to have gone down a hole. Waiting for the meds.....Waiting for the meds...Waiting for the meds....Waiting for the meds....

There they are and now once more into the breach.

Fair enough. If it has value for you then of course you should stick with it. I suspect those who find value are reducing in number but I don't really know as I can't be bothered to research it.
