KiwiNZ: I am totally flabbergasted that folks are prepared to accept and defend racial and other discrimination. It is disgraceful.

I hope that is not to mean that "well, we are not perfect - so why try"?
Where would we have been if there was no progress and people didn't get more rights? Women wouldn't be allowed to vote, we would still have black slaves, etc. Going far enough back the "regular joe" wouldn't have had a say either. Progress is a good thing, but it doesn't happen if everyone sits back and says "ah, well - thats life".

I don't think it's more a case of "why try, lets all have slaves because nobody is perfect." As it is: "Haha, everybody with my skin colour was just called a cracka' on international television, but it was funny because I'm watching a comedy show under my own free will and am not being unjustifiably harassed in the middle of a street by a different race in a negative and threatening way."

Some things are funny some things are not. A custard pie in the face is funny, a racial slur is not.

So I think what you are debating is the amount of time involved.

blakamin:KiwiNZ: A custard pie in the face is funny,
A custard pie in the face hasn't been funny since 1929.
DaveB:KiwiNZ: The use of a racist term in the Bridge Special in Burma clear and obvious and disgraceful
JC to one side for a moment ..... do you think Mike King is racist? Or Billy T, Billy C or hundreds of other brilliant comedians who have the skill to get us to laugh alongside and at each other?
pgs2050: A day after Trevor Noah was announced as the next host of Jon Stewart's show, a number of people have exposed Trevor's history of racist and sexist tweets originally made in humour. It will be interesting to see the fallout (if any) from this and contrast it with the consequences of Clarkson's actions.
