What about the other regions that have difficulty getting public servants for whatever reason, are we going to start funding them more to attract people?
Fred99:
Should taxpayers be forking out to boost the wages/salaries for people working in public sector jobs in Auckland - so that for example Auckland schools can attract and retain "better" teachers, some of whom seem to have been claiming that living in Auckland when earning a salary well above the national average is "unaffordable" - or should the market be left to it level itself out?
Certainly wouldn't be the first city to pay weighting allowances.
Seems fair. Everywhere in NZ, many costs differ from elsewhere, this is just another

How's that worked out in terms of the (housing) affordability of London?

Do private companies have a different pay grade for the same job if you live in the likes of Auckland?? When I worked for Telecom the pay scales were the same where every you lived in the country so a person in a cheaper country area was always way better of than those in a city area. I'd be against the tax payer subsidizing public servants to move to a city..

Of course not. We should do what we've always done, and force teachers to take these unpalatable positions by making them a condition of their employment (e.g. "Country Service" bar). Why pay out good money when some-one can be arm-twisted into doing it for nothing?

Telecom is one company. Take one industry. You want certain staff. It costs more to live in AKL, so you offer more. Or you could offer less, and get less quality staff. Thats a generalisation, but its supply and demand.
