MikeB4: Our Pacific Island friends will need New Zealand and Australia to have open hearts and open borders.

Those countries are traditionally under our protection - however North African and Middle Eastern countries are not traditional protectees of Great Britain.

Given the Dawn Raids and similar if not worse policies in Australia, "protection" is doing some heavy lifting there.

Hawaii holds a special place in America's heart, in particular to those elderly over 60.

It's been put on a pedestal as a Pacific paradise, with friendly hula dancer, where you only have to worry about the occasional volcano while you sit on the beach in perfect weather while being serenaded by ukuleles.

So maybe to those foolish enough in America to deny climate change, it may be the wake-up call they needed. (and the loss of insurance on their Florida retirement house)

"In 2021, she was paying $3,035 (£2,386) annually. After her insurer stopped writing new policies in her neighbourhood, in 2022, the quote she received from the state-backed plan was more than triple that amount - $9,876 - a sum she could not afford."

Azzura: New Orleans owner 'Who will buy my house if they can't get insurance'

New Orleans and Florida are both have problems.

The problem in Florida is that anything below sea level pretty much guarantees it's below the water level. Also there are extensive swamp lands that are very close to sea level.

Florida governor Ron DeSantis administration approved a climate denial videos for classroom use.

The lowest point New Orleans is 2 meters below sea level. Significant portions of the city are below sea level due to subsidence

Garret Graves is a forty-seven-year-old Republican congressman from Louisiana: “that those who were denying were taking an unsustainable position. That the science was going to further and further sink the island that they were standing on, and that eventually they would be inundated.”

There are parts of the U.K. - such as The Fens in East Anglia - which are below sea level. They were drained by the Dutch using wind driven pumps and things a very long time ago and are still drained by pumps, albeit electrical ones now.

It’ll be interesting to see whether insurance becomes problematic for houses and farms in the area.

The Fens(wetlands) should be restored. Wetlands are very efficient at absorbing and storing carbon.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Aren't the Hauraki Plains similar?

Yes they were and in retrospect they should have been left that way. There is remedial work being undertaken in various areas of Aotearoa to restore wetlands but a lot more needs to be done.

They certainly are. Takes quite an extensive network of stop banks, "canals" and pump stations to keep it drained.

Montana is a deeply conservative mid-west US state. It's actually considered a safe-haven for the most extreme right-wing groups in the US.

So it's not liberal by any measure. This judgement is surprising.

NPR: Judge sides with young activists in first-of-its-kind climate change trial in Montana

Montana judge on Monday sided with young environmental activists who said state agencies were violating their constitutional right to a clean and healthful environment by permitting fossil fuel development without considering its effect on the climate.

The ruling following a first-of-its- kind trial in the U.S. adds to a small number of legal decisions around the world that have established a government duty to protect citizens from climate change.

District Court Judge Kathy Seeley found the policy the state uses in evaluating requests for fossil fuel permits — which does not allow agencies to evaluate the effects of greenhouse gas emissions — is unconstitutional.

Judge Seeley wrote in the ruling that "Montana's emissions and climate change have been proven to be a substantial factor in causing climate impacts to Montana's environment and harm and injury" to the youth.

However, it's up to the state Legislature to determine how to bring the policy into compliance. That leaves slim chances for immediate change in a fossil fuel-friendly state where Republicans dominate the statehouse.

What I bolded, is incorrect. Montana, and Ethiopia and Greenland, etc etc and etc are affected by global climate change. Montana's emissions will be prevailing winds and be cast elsewhere, so no effect. They blow away. But who causes what blow to them??

No, it is not incorrect. The sum total of our emissions is destroying the nice stable climate we have. Everyone's contribution to that affects them even if the 'smoke,' as it were, gets blown somewhere else. Montana's emissions contribute to the instability that caused the cyclones in New Zealand this year. Our emissions contribute to ... whatever is happening to the round American women and their recreational vehicle driving husbands in Montana. And vice versa.

It's a global problem. That's the point.

Actually, it is a global responsibility. That is the sharper point. It is like picking up the trash on the beach. The issue isn't only how it got there, but if you are just going to walk past it.
