True, but you are a mature (I hope) professional, the guys we deal with are generally younger gamers and like websites like Megaupload. It was the agreed upon service by the council which runs our community so that's what we used.

We now use Scribd

RIP Megaupload for the moment. Who will be next on the FBI list? RS, FS? they are guilty one way or the other how the hell can they keep track of millions of uploads each day they rely on customers to report the links if its piracy. I can think of another business that relies on its customers to report piracy TradeMe will they go down the gurglar in the near future because they couldn't keep up-to-date. So are they going to shutdown other major file hosts Rapidshare to name one. If I google search say for Office 2011 Professional I will find links to the upload of office pointing to Rapidshare I report it to RS, RS takes it down. Do the same thing couple hours later, Office 2011 is back up on RS, report it RS takes it down. Never ends. So will they go down the gurglar too? No. This big show off shutting down was a ploy in support of the SOPA bill that now the US senators don't want anything to do with IMHO.

Item #23 in the indictment is the cause of all the trouble.

Everything else is just fluff and additional things intended to make them look bad without being nearly as substantial to the case.

Item 23: "The Conspiracy's internal reference database tracks the links that have been generated by the system, but duplicative links to infringing materials are neither disclosed to copyright holders, nor are they automatically deleted when a copyright holder either uses the Abuse Tool or makes a standard DMCA copyright infringement takedown request. During the course of the Conspiracy, the Mega Conspiracy has received many millions of requests (through the Abuse Tool and otherwise) to remove infringing copies of copyrighted works and yet the Conspiracy has, at best, only deleted the particular URL of which the copyright holder complained, and purposefully left the actual infringing copy of the copyrighted work on the Mega Conspiracy-controlled server and any other access links completely intact"

Despite the language of the indictment, these are still just allegations, and they must be proven in court.

My guess is MU will vigorously defend that the law allows MU to do exactly what is described above.

As for the saferoom, my bet is he used it to buy time and was talking to his legal team the whole time he was in there.

I think if a pile of armed police and helicopters turned up at my place and I had a saferoom, that is where I would retreat to too and be busy calling a lawyer to ensure my safety.

No way would I trust a crowd of hyped up NZ Police out on a firearm armed adventure not to do something stupid.

Yes, I'm thinking it will have big implications for the MAFIAA that they haven't anticipated, and won't enjoy. It's a sign that they are getting increasingly desperate, but over the wrong issue IMHO.

Basically many services could fall victim to what has happened. eg a gmail account that is used to upload files to. youtube, where movies could be uploaded to. Sure all these can be taken down if google are sent a warning about it from a copyright holder, but they don't really have an active way to actively monitor everyones accounts. There just aren't the resources for it and would cost too much. Even your isp that provides free hosting, or email accounts, that could be abuse and used to store and distribute files from.

They are going to get you from the safe room so you have no choice but to put yourself in there custody at some point - I would suggest it would be easier to just give up than make them get you out by force, which comes with its own set of (even higher) risks & dangers. Duh.

I wonder if clandestine data centres are being established in Ureweras?

Give up peacefully, or resist. Resisting even passively has a far higher potential for someone to get hurt. Common sense. Nothing worrying in that.

From last time I spoke with NZFACT guy, organised crime are well and truely into counterfeit / pirated movies.

D/Load then copy a movie onto DVDr material, whats the cost, 30 - 50c for the disc?

Sell it at the markets etc, $10 - $15 a piece, tidy profit.

Get caught, slap on the hand at best and then go back and do it again

No big deterrent as opposed to their more "staple" income of drugs, higher risks, lower returns and harsher penalties. Give the gangs the benefit of the doubt that they are "business minded" and its really a no brainer as to which way they would go.

I would hazard a guess that Heir Dotcom is most likely already involved with the gangs in some way,.
