Being ghosted by roofing contractors 😠

We have dormers in a metal (decramastic) tile roof, that are leaking.. I have contacted 6-8 roofers so far, of those that have agreed to come have a look, the conversation has gone like this:

them: tiles need to be lifted, and valley extended to roof edge, etc
me: okay, how much?
them: we'll send you a quote
...crickets...
me: Hi, about that quote?

Use builders crack. In saying that though, I’ve requested quotes for a brick+ali fence at our new place and only had a couple of bites.

Ge0rge: I'm after a Torx T27 bit, that is at least 100mm long. Must have the ability to be driven by a torque wrench, so no handle etc.

RS have what I want, for $17. Add shipping, $60!!

Could you use a torx bit in a 1/4 or 10mm socket or is the screw down a very narrow hole?

When I have had people doing something similar they taped up a wall of plastic sheet that had a door in it which was a zip type thing to keep the dust on one side of it.

We've spent the weekend debating why this wasn't done.

There weren't even dropcloths put down.

After a weekend of living in the dust and grit I am getting angrier by the hour.

I am awaiting a call back from the Insurers. I have a lot of questions...

Deep down a narrow hole unfortunately.

Their ploy works, I ended up buying some other tools at the same time to bring the shipping percentage down.

T27 is a shade under 5mm. An M2.5 nut or bolt would fit, but I doubt you would get one 100mm long. But maybe you could screw it into a long standoff, or series fo standoffs?

Or get a 1/4" drive socket extension and grind down the square end by .6mm on each side.

I got all my weird and wonderful bits and screwdrivers off aliexpress because noone locally seems to sell much outside of what builders need.

Need a long hex 5mm screwdriver - sorted online, but nothing locally. Same for a 300mm pozidrive impact bit as pozidrive seems to have all but died in the NZ construction market - but was able to get one online. Are they the greatest metal? No. Do they get out screws put in by people 20+ years ago when pozi was going to be the fastener of the future despite just being a dressed up piece of crap phillips drive? Yes, they all come out fine from the recess they're in.

On the subject of AliExpress. I ordered a linear actuator during the sale. The seller failed to send it within the required period, so I needed to find another. Of course, the sale has now ended :(

You could play the something-match game in the Aliexpress app to get points that you can exchange for coins that you can use to buy coupons that you can probably redeem in a future sale at a store you might be interested in unless the points, coins, or coupons have expired by then.

Thats always the case, but the sales are generally nothing much. If it was a decent saving they would probably lose money on it which is why they didn't send anything. Be glad they didn't send an iPhone cable just for the tracking number. I think they are now wise to people who keep video and details of what they get to fight that crap happening.

That seems to be increasingly common. :( In the last 6 months or so, I have had to open disputes on about half my orders, mostly for non-delivery. Only on one occasion did I ever get the goods I had ordered (over 2 months after I ordered them, and a month after the "expected" delivery date.

A $7 screwdriver would do the 100mm part. I'm not sure what the torquing requirement is for but looking at what's on hand I would heat up one of the many sparkplug sockets I've got and push the screwdriver into it.

Getting all the way to the garage and forgetting what I was there for only to remember when I get back inside. Can only blame myself, I must not stop to read texts when on a mission.

The house.

After a lengthy discussion with the project manager and the builders, it looks like we'll be moving out again and they'll be upping the scope to essentially include a new floor throughout the top level and as a consequence of that action, the kitchen will go as well. There'll be commercial cleaners, carpet repairs from the damage caused by the last builders and a whole lot of other fun stuff.
Because of the Auckland floods, there's little to no accommodation available, so they will have to try and make our house liveable for the short term, while we wait for something to come up. Add to that the fact that we have a dog that needs urgent medical care and a wife losing her job next week due to restructure - all is awesome in the Handsomedan household.

Oh, did I mention that the eldest son is turning 18 tomorrow and we can't really have any kind of celebration at home?

That parking on Fire Hydrants is NOT a towable offence!

Even if you have a wheel on the Hydrant lid for over 5 hours (Or for days) you only get 1 x $60 fine!

Cheaper daily parking than a parking building (Not early bird) or metered spaces!

The Hospital even charge:

  • 30-60 minutes: $7.50
  • From 60 minutes onwards: additional $5 per half hour or part thereof ($80 maximum charge for a 24-hour period).
