MadEngineer:

There seems to be a new breed of headlamps that are crazy annoyingly bright, with extra-bright spots right in the middle of their focus.

Came across one the other day which was some kind of Mitsi.  It had headlights on the extreme outer corners of the bumper and every now and then I'd get an annoying flash from the center of that focus across all my mirrors.

There's another style that I've commonly seen with this problem which has what looks like a row of LED lights across the top of it.  The headlamps in these also have a similar effect.

Might be this one, which is apparently from a Hilux:

Yup - my RAV4 has similar headlights and they are BRIGHT! They're also at just the wrong height for smaller cars in terms of where the light is focused.

They look like this:

Great for driving along a deserted highway - ridiculously bright and distracting on a suburban road.

We've recently switched to a ticketing system called Zendesk, and it's anything but zen.

"We'd love to hear what you think of our customer service. Please take a moment to answer one simple question by clicking either link below:
How would you rate the support you received?
Good, I'm satisfied
Bad, I'm unsatisfied"

Both links go to a page saying that I don't have permissions to rate tickets. Why send an automated email asking me to rate tickets if my account doesn't have permission to rate tickets?!

Dealing with the insurance company - you have to chase, chase, chase all the time. No proactivity at all.
Add to that, if I call (Which I am currently doing), you're on hold for at least an hour, if not double that.

When you do get through, it's often to someone that can't help and has to "make some notes and get someone to call back" which of course never happens.

The ridiculous level of difficulty installing any mainstream version of Linux (Ubuntu, Debian) on a headless machine with only a serial console via a USB key. There's endless amounts of instructions on this online, all of which are out of date, wrong, describe files and options that don't exist, don't work, or are so vague as to be unusable, e.g. "just add option X and it'll be fine". I'm now six hours into a phone chat with someone trying to do this, so far without success.

Edited to add: Just to clarify, this is the x86/64 version, not an ARM one, for which it seems to be a hardcoded assumption that there's at least a VGA output and keyboard present.

Don’t they have a system to prevent oncoming drivers being dazzled?

My Mercedes has lights made of many many LEDs in an array and the system literally shuts off individual ones to create a dynamic dark hole that the oncoming traffic is in whilst retaining full illumination on much of the rest.

It’s great to drive with, I have to say. You just leave it on auto.

That every piece of software going seems to think it justifies a major release to incorporate a "dark theme"...

And then that "dark theme" has to be selected manually inside the app instead of picking up the system-wide setting.

The Marlborough District council is increasing its cost of rubbish collection, displacing cheaper private sector services, which charge half as much.

In Marlborough rubbish collection nis via council rubbish bags and recycling crate.  Both are collected weekly, you get a number of free bags each year, included in standard rates.  I don't like rubbish bags, so we give our rubbish bag voucher away.

We have a 140L wheelie bin emptied fortnightly for $80/year.  This service is provided by Redtop wheelie bins.

The MDC has introduced a system where we will pay $160/year for the same sized bin, also collect fortnightly.  That's twice the price for the same thing.  There is no opt-out.  Everyone gets a bin and it's added to your rates (no reduction in the general rate which currently includes rubbish collection).  For slightly less you get a smaller bin.  For slightly more you get a larger bin.  Rate payer (not occupant) choice in both cases, but there is no escaping the grasping talons of the MDC.

So here is the council price gouging, sneakily increasing rates cost  and at the same time excluding private providers who can do it cheaper and IME more reliably (compared to MDC collections).  It's a small amount of money, but the principal here is all wrong.

I'm not convinced a change based on superstition is going to solve dysfunctional, mismanaged organisations.

Can't make things any worse!

Edit: As an aside, I disagree with the sentiment expressed in your signature. The bee's bum is an aggressive object, used for insult and excretion, housing a weapon meant to injure and even kill. The knees are innocuous and non-threatening, something no-one needs to fear. Bee's knees are always welcome at a picnic.
