josephhinvest: Ender's Game. Overall pretty good. Fairly faithful to the book but lots missing obviously because of time constraints. Visually very nice. Could not believe how shockingly bad Ben Kingsley's accent was. Wow.

We know about his mother already, but the most likely in universe explanation for the accent is Rackam's father was a South African of German origin who spent a lot of time in the Northern Territory. The other possibility, Kingsley's fee didn't cover an accent.

They could have had Tem Morrison AND Cliff Curtis for half Ben Kingsley's fee...

But they didn't need Bobba Fett or an Iraqi Terrorist...

So they got Ghandi? (or the bad guy from Thunderbirds...)

ToPGuNZ: Re-watched The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug. I increase my previous score 1 point now = 7/10

I did enjoy it more the second time around. Took in more of the story and apreciated the costumes, art etc.

American Hustle 5/10
Could not get into this one. I thought the actors were great and the ending was good but I felt torn between thinking this feels like a comedy but should be drama. Cannot pin point it, just was not drawn into it. A couple even left the theatre which surprised me as it was not that bad.

I saw American Hustle also, and would give it 6/10 also. My score would be higher if it was 30 minutes shorter - it was a long movie that I felt didn't need to be so long.

Searching for sugarman - was on Rialto channel.

Won Oscar 2013 best documentary. About a south african journalist trying to trackdown a an american musician who sold huge amounts of records there during the 1970's but no where else in the world and was assumed to be dead. Music was wonderful, have ordered the soundtrack. Nice to watch something with a warm and fuzzy ending.

The Gatekeepers - interviews with previous heads of israeli secret service and the opinions/recollections of events over the previous 40 yrs in Occupied state and dealing with politicians and peace process. Most eye opening moment is when one of them admitted to thinking the treatment pf the Palestinians by the secret service was analogous to how the Nazi's treated average civilians in the occupied countries (but not how they treated Jews and other involved in the death camps)

the counselor wasn't far behind - ridley scott is turning out crap after crap - give up now - 2/10 - only 'cos it has some nice cars in it.

Sounds like both of you will enjoy A Band Called Death - I gave it a 8/10. Documentary about a black punk rock band from Detroit, formed and fallen before punk was a genre. They shut shop after only managing to release a limited press 7-single, the legend gets reborn when a newspaper column or radio show reviews one of the singles found in an old second hand record store and a documentary team goes after the remaining members. I gave Searching for the Sugarman 9/10 - love that man's lyrics and humility, an example to all.

The Hunger Games - Catching Fire. I'm a Jennifer Lawrence fangirl, so 8/10.

You know, as an ex-Saffer, I had not the faintest clue that Rodriguez wasn't a huge thing everywhere until that doco came out. The song  'Sugarman' to me embodies the zeitgeist of the 70's - hearing it was one of my earliest musical memories. :)

So I got bored over the holiday period and watched a whole lotta blurays... :)

Riddick 5/10 - This could have been so much better but at least it was stirring back towards Pitch Black styles.

Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters 1/10 - And I thought it couldn't get any worse than the original... nuff said!

RIPD 3/10 - What a letdown and a complete Men in Black rip-off.

Kick A$$ 2 4/10 - Another letdown, completely lacks any charm that the first one had.

The Conjuring 8/10 - Quite possibly one of the better horrors I've watched in awhile, looking forward to a sequel/prequel if it ever gets made.

Two Guns 2/10 - Sad to see such a talent like Denzel in a movie like this.

The Lone Ranger 1/10 - A poor man's Pirates of the Carribean...

This is the End 6/10 - Madness! Fantastic for a few laughs. One of Jonah Hill's better acting moments since Superbad.

I really liked Wolf of Wall Street. Funny and, for once, a film that didn't just mindlessly execute the usual Hollywood "bad guys, good guys, action, good guy wins in the end, Ooooh big explosions" formulaic plot line - where you can predict the ending before it's half way through.

Wolf of Wallstreet, that's one I want to see.

I liked Ender's Game well enough. The scene on the lake about Enders knowing then destroying people was cringeworthy and was much better in the book. The previous comment about Kingsley was accurate but the rest of the movie was pretty good.

Funny how personal taste is so....personal.

Of your list, I have seen 4 movies:

Percy J, KA, RIPD and This is...

Of those, I have an almost Polar opposite view to yours, with teh exception of Percy Jackson, which I endured with my kids the other day...excrutiating.
