Phillips after selling LED's promising long life (which is not that true anyway) have now 'magically' come up with ones which are 40% more efficient, and say the savings make upgrading worthwhile.

I am in favour of progress, but what happens to the millions of light bulbs that will be replaced?

neb: People who mix units like, to take a random example, "6 feet" and "30 metres" :-).

Thats what the fencing guy told me, he said people can visualise 30 metres long but have no idea if he tells them 1.8 metres high

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Well, if they're in Wellington street lights they will in the due efflux of time plummet from the heavens onto the roads and footpaths (and from time to time the heads 😡) of the huddled masses gathered beneath them seeking illumination

😬😬😬

i am in the middle of painting a 6 foot 30 metre long fence, i have 2-3 metres to go and i have run out of fence stain, the only problem is that the stain is only sold in 10 litre tubs. expensive last couple of metres, roughly $25 a metre to finish. Sigh.

I have one you're welcome to come and do to use up your spare...

What's wrong with (showing my age), "737 long, Elle McPherson high"?

Microsoft Teams. There's a "new chat" feature which doesn't seem to work: The moment I select a person to have a "new" chat with, it fills the window with old messages to/from that person.

Geektastic: The fact that it seems impossible to buy bread of the correct dimensions to ensure my toasted sandwich maker actually makes toasted sandwiches that (a) don’t leak and (b) get toasted.

I believe I posted about this same problem sometime ago with both of my breville big one, sunbeam big fill and even the deep one from kmart.

If they are the $20+ ones from bunnings, the savings don't stack up, and they have a horrid green tint to the light they make. Seems philips have had problems with colours all the way back to the first hue lamps.

They are flicker free, and come in cool white so if you can deal with the trash tier CRI they have, may be ok in some places.

Try selling cut pieces of metal to jewellers and wanna be jewellers. they use centimeters, millimeters, don't realize what they are saying and get something much larger and more expensive than they expected delivered.

Only children and dressmakers use centimeters.

Crossposted from the Smile thread:

Or require a "subscription" to the App so that the device keeps working!

It annoys me that the marketing departments seem to have won this particular battle. A subscription in the traditional sense, such as a magazine subscription, meant that you paid per month/year/whatever and received something. When you stopped paying, you kept whatever you'd received, but stopped getting new products. Early subscription software worked like this too, and the software would continue to function if you cancelled your subscription, but you would no longer receive new versions.

Most pay-as-you-go software has now moved to a rental model, where cancelling the rental means that you lose access to the software entirely. However, those companies' marketing departments refer to the rentals as "subscriptions"... and most consumers now seem to use that term too. This makes it hard to distinguish actual subscription software from rental software without having to dig into the terms and conditions.

Ours is a Sunbeam Big Fill 4.

I think it has been neutered in the name of "safety" - the upper part is not as hot as the lower part (evidenced by the fact that the bottom slices are better toasted than the anaemic upper slices) and I am sure it is just in case some numpty touches the top and wonders why they got burned..!

Overall the unit is generally a 4/10 in my opinion and will find it's way to the local charity shop when I can determine a model that actually makes toasted sandwiches instead of hot bread sandwiches.
