I think everyone's done something like that at one time or another. I was once chatting with a guy at a social event and he happened to mention something related to his orchestra, can't remember the context any more but I assumed he played the clarinet in an informal group that met in a school hall every second Tuesday or something.

It was only later that I found out that it was the XYZ Symphony Orchestra and he was their music director/conductor of 25 or so years.

So glad I'm not the only one who does that kind of thing.

Getting a kiss from bowl of my Weber when adjusting the bottom vent. There’s a nice big red mark on my arm now.

SirHumphreyAppleby:

This has been bugging me all week. Annoyed with myself.

Like many in IT, I am not at my best in crowds or social gatherings. I am also incredibly bad with names and faces, to the point that I struggle to recognise people I know outside of the usual settings at times if I don't know them well or haven't seen them in a while.

At the Rod Stewart concert last week, I found myself next to someone while having a quick bite before the show. He looked familiar, but I couldn't place him. He said hello and something about the concert. I remarked that I had seats at the back of the floor, so I wasn't sure how much I'd see, but being there was the important part. I didn't expect the conversation to continue, it was more of a quick acknowledgement that we were both occupying the same proximate location whist waiting for the doors to open, but I did add that it would possibly be my last concert as the oldies are all dying/retiring, and that I wouldn't see The Eagles without Glenn Frey or Fleetwood Mac without Lindsey Buckingham, since both are groups I have seen and would see again if not for the lineup changes. Nothing more was said, and I didn't really think anything of it, until I became aware that the person I was talking to was apparently Tim Finn, the brother of Neil Finn (Crowded House) who toured with Fleetwood Mac in 2018/2019 after Buckingham was removed from the group. I must've seemed like a real dick saying that.

I'm out again in public tomorrow, so plenty more chances for me to put my foot in my mouth and have something else to dwell on for the next week.

Tim Finn was of course in Crowded House as well.

BL00DY OPSM keeps sending me their marketing/spam TXTs

I have sent "STOP" multiple times to get myself of their list, and they still keep coming

I complained to the DIA last time and still a new one has turned up today which has also been forwarded to the DIA

"Should have gone to SpecSavers" rings so true now. There is ZERO chance I will EVER go to OPSM again, they have ZERO customer respect.

I completely agree with this. I went to OSPM because I got this free and was a few weeks short of my next free Specsavers check-up. I had been involved in an incident which resulted in glass in my eyes. I wasn't prepared to simply take the doctor's word that everything was fine, and since my old glasses had been damaged, I figured a new prescription was in order. I now have both OPSM and Specsavers sending me reminders that my next checkup is over-due, but OPSM was particularly annoying.

WHY is it that telcos are (allowed to be) forcing businesses to use short codes now? It'd be fine if businesses had unique short codes it wouldn't be an issue - just block them. But since a unique code costs hundreds of dollars per month, nobody uses them and you can't block texts from common numbers, otherwise you may miss out on other legitimate texts from businesses you actually want to hear from!

Sigh...back to "I will not give you my phone number" spiel

But feel free to use my email address kjwspamtrap@gmail.com (yep I own this, and once every month or 6 I just delete everything in it)

If I need to do a "reply" I can, but the address is still 100% worthless to them.

If they will no accept that, I will find a business who will...F them.

Right click > New > Folder > Give it a name > Enter > Explorer freezes for about a minute. This is on a local SSD. Creating folders has been standard PC functionality since 1981; how in the world is this sort of thing still a problem 42 years later?

It takes time to look these things up in Windows for Dummies.

Don't go to OPSM anyway. They're part of the Essillor-Luxxottica monopoly, a company so evil that if they approach you to buyout your company and you refuse, they just destock your products from their massive retail presence until you go bankrupt then buy the carcass of your company for pennies on the dollar, like they did to Oakley. Supporting them is supporting the destruction of competition in eyewear.

Sounds to me like your system needs a good cleanout. Folder creation should be almost instantaneous, renaming should be as quick.

Which version of Windows are you using? In both W7 and W10, another way to create a new folder is to hold down the Alt key and hit the F key, then the W key, then F again. To rename a folder in both W7 and W10, left click it once and hit F2. If you're on a laptop you'll need to hold down the Fn (Function) key as well as F2.

As if the floods, a similar previous incident that resulted in a death isn't enough, we have this:

Child pinned under log at Gisborne beach as family dug frantically to free her | Stuff.co.nz

[Trigger warning]

Not to discredit the family for their poor decisions here over the mess from the logging but I remember a story I heard when I was a youngster of a kid that was left to play on the remnants of an old tree that some halfwit had decided to try and destroy with some explosives.  The kid slipped on its remains and entirely sliced open a leg.  Some things should be obvious to keep yourself and your family clear of.
