MadEngineer:

As if the floods, a similar previous incident that resulted in a death isn't enough, we have this:

Child pinned under log at Gisborne beach as family dug frantically to free her | Stuff.co.nz

...

I'm in two minds about this.

Obviously no-one wants to see people, especially kids, getting hurt.

On the flip-side, statistically there will always be some mishaps when kids are engaged in adventure play.  Do we really want to discourage this, and go down the 'wrap in cotton-wool, sit inside and play videogames all day' cliche track?

As for the question if there was an adult/parental negligence in this particular case - who really knows.  We weren't there.

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

That smoke alarms never go off for no reason during the day but instead wait for 3am to shriek into the darkness and scare the bejeebas out of you. All our alarms have this same built in 'must be after midnight' feature.

So where do you dispose of a 'lasts for ten years' alarm that’s only three years old and has a sealed non removable battery that will continue to go off randomly for the next 7 years no matter where it resides.

That's when it's coldest, so a marginal battery will dip below the low-battery-alert and/or erratic-functioning level.

Wish I could even remember where mine were even bought. I intend to write a date and where purchased and where I keep the receipt on the back of the next lot. Have gone through so many of these ten year ones.

Our house alarm back-up battery tends to die in the night on a weekend every few years, just shy of the recommended service date/time.

Nothing quite like being woken by a persistent beep that can't be turned off for a sustained period.

The total dysfunctionality of online fast-food ordering. Someone else in the group decided a few days ago that we'd do fast food for dinner, we'll drive to a nearby location where there's a cluster of fast food places, order online while en route, and it'll be ready by the time we get there.

Every single one of us ended up ordering by phone because of how broken each place's online ordering was:

Hell Pizza: Need to sign up for an account before you can order, by the time that was going to be done we'd be at the location.

Nandos: They only list a subset of what they carry, and in particular no salads. Tried to call them to order but it always went to voicemail.

Burger Wisconsin: Quoted a prep time of half an hour (to pull a meat patty from the chiller, slap it on a hot plate, and put it between two buns). Waited till we go there and ordered at the counter, the guy quoted ten minutes. It was actually more like fifteen since they spent most of the time standing talking to each other, but it was still less than the 30 minutes the web site gave.

Someone else, Pizza Hut I think: Something else, whatever it was the person gave up and phoned them.

These are national chains and they can't even figure out how to let you order through their web site. In contrast with the local hole-in-the-wall Indian place which is run by three people you can order in one to two minutes and it's ready when you get there. They've outsourced it obviously, but the main thing is that it works.

Don't ever order KFC online for either pickup or delivery. They charge significantly more per item than in store. The Commerce Commission really should be all over that one.

KFC is actually fast enough that I'd never even consider doing an online order, at most you'd save a minute or two.

Except in the US, where they've managed to make fast food into slow food by asking you 300 questions about which options you want so it takes you longer to order the stuff than to eat it. Seriously!

....and their emails rarely show any prices now, or their website until you (I assume) put things in your cart!

I subscribed just to watch the price increases, but the novelty of that has gone now!

How about when you order this backpack online @ Warehouse Stationery @ $15 each, and they arrive with their $10 price tag still attached!

Way to go Warehouse Stationery! Encourage online orders NOT!

All of you are clearly doing it wrong!

Get up at 2am and INSTALL them, then they will beep during the day :)

It's all very simple :)

Was wondering that too, charging more for pickup/delivery seems to be pretty standard in the food industry (don't want to say "restaurant industry" since this is KFC we're talking about).
