This annoys me https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/300873898/missing-student-swept-away-by-floodwaters-on-school-trip-to-abbey-caves-whangrei

The fact that a school thought an outdoor ed trip to some caves was a good idea when this weather has been predicted for some days now...outrageous and may have cost a child their life as a result.

Regrettably, they found a body last night.

An absolute tragedy for all concerned.

Hopefully recriminations will wait for the right amount of time to pass for everyone to grieve.

The balance of safety seems screwed up when arborists trimming trees over 50m from the road has to have traffic management trucks, road cones and a restricted speed limit for about 1km of highway and a known dangerous cave has a small sign.

Overly dark tv scenes.
Sick today so thought I'd watch some apple tv "invasion".
Despite sitting in lounge with curtains drawn there's been a night section which is so dark I can't really see anythimg.
Oh well I read the subtitles for 20 minutes +

Atmospheric it might be but not if I can't see anything.

Movies, too. We did a Harry Potter marathon a while back and after watching either #5 or #6 I stopped and checked the calibration of the projector. It was correct, and the later HP movies are just really dark.

The darkness of movies and mumbling is a reasonably recent thing. As mics have got smaller and cameras have got more sensitive to light, directors and DoPs have got more 'creative'. With lapel and discreet mics, actors no longer have to project their voice towards a boom mic, or a mic hidden in some flowers on table, so they can whisper, or mumble.

Similar with the image, digital cameras can get away with underexposing and then using to post to fix, which means they sit in a perfectly dark environment and adjust the light levels and go, perfect. Then we sit in the lounge and can't see anything. Same with the sound.

There was a good youtube clip explaining it, something along the lines of, no, it's not you or your tv.

Trademe listing, "Description, colour, length = X, width = Y, good condition".

Question: What is the length and width of the item?

That you can’t recycle lids for some reason.

Geektastic: That you can’t recycle lids for some reason.

The usual answer given is "Lids are too small for the automatic sorting equipment to detect correctly"!!!.

If it was Dubai it would be

"Last price" followed by "my budget in 50% of your last price"

My response is usually "cool, go buy something else"

I've just sold a car on FB marketplace. The number of people who ask "What's the lowest price you'll take?", to which I answer "What's the highest price you'll pay?"

Even worse is the stunning number of alleged people who ping to ask "Is this still available?" and when I reply yes, they are suddenly abducted by aliens and never heard from again.

At least you're aware. The local council used to say "Check the lids; if they have the 1 to 7 symbols on them, they can be recycled too!" (courtesy of the Wayback Machine), but then at some point they changed the rules to "no lids".

I say "at some point" because this was done through stealth; the rules on the website were updated but as far as I'm aware the rule change wasn't otherwise publicised. A short while later, the council had a grizzle in the newspaper about people not following the rules.

Ah if only! And if only immediately there was subsequently an offer of extra large probes for sale, in good but used condition.
