Told my boss there is no incentive buying a dock if I can just work from home where I've got a fit for purpose setup. He agreed.

Try being English and listening to Kiwis. Pen/Pin. Six/Sex. Ten/Tin etc Believe it or not, even after living here almost 20 years, i still meet people that I cannot understand and have to ask them to repeat what they said more slowly!

I heard what the "subtitles" told me to hear, but it sounded odd when he said it (sounded a bit like a South African saying it). I suspect I'd have heard the correct word if the video wasn't trying to make me hear something else. Did anyone else find the same?

Is it not a Kiwi thing that generally we can easily understand all the flavours of spoken English?  If someone told you they left something in the boot or bonnet or trunk you wouldn't be confused at all.  What does catch us out however is when speaking to an Australian perhaps, as generally their accent is very subtle.  That is until you've switched off listening for any differences they and ask you to take the lead off something and you're standing there looking at a box looking for something like a dog leash when they actually said "lid".

There are exceptions

We're also weird when it comes to language as a means of making class distinctions. In the UK you can bin people based on whether they sit on a couch, settee, or sofa, and it's in the lounge, living room, sitting room, or front room. In NZ we're all over the place, mixing everything from working-class to upper-class words with complete abandon.

Which UK population group is reponsible for this typical example of English mangling?

"Truly, I told him two or three times at lease to telephone me before he star-id work on my com-pyu-ah."

Seems the letter T must be silent when it's at or near the end of a sentence. Blimey.

Perhaps but can all other flavours of English speakers understand Kiwis?

Years ago I was sitting around a large dining table for lunch at a resort. A group of about eight guests had been thrown together by the seating arrangements at the resort. Everyone was speaking English and there were people from a range of countries.

The conversation drifted into a discussion about accents. A young US guy just didn’t get it and flatly refused to accept that he had an accent - only everyone else had accents. The most he would admit was that he might have a certain ‘linguistic style’. Not the sharpest knife at the table.

Reminds of the day I arrived in Dublin in 2011 and my first day of work. Was on a conference call with a guy from Galway and a colleague from Mumbai. We were all speaking English but I had to repeat what was being said as neither the Galway lad nor the guy from Mumbai could understand each other.

Going to cover a few things that are annoying me!

Countdowns use of the marketing rip off "great price" when that is a regular over priced item!

Countdown leaving the old great price on for months past when they crank that price up and over charging you at the checkout.**

Mega mitre advertising mothers day plant cyclamen for $8 on radio and display and they charge you $8.97, you realise when you live 50 minutes away!

Countdown seem to have switched the crumbed processed chicken range, which looks really really processed now. More expensive and less of it.

Right got that off my chest :-)

According to one of the supervisors at the local Countdown there's currently a bit of a chicken shortage, which is why the current frozen product line is out of kilter with the normally available range.

Keep calm, and carry on posting.

Which came first? The Chicken or Egg Shortage?

Yes I hate those 'great price' attention-getting signs designed to fool you into thinking it means 'price reduction' when it just means 'we want to sell this to you'.

I'm not sure if countdown still has the refund policy - if you got overcharged you would get your money back and keep the item.

The scheme worked out well for me for a couple of expensive items but generally I think the house wins 😝
