Handsomedan:

Amongst all of our house hassles (i.e. the post-flooding "renovations") our dishwasher was resinstalled, so we could have a "normal" life for a few weeks while the new scope of work is written up and submitted before the insurers sign it off and we get to phase three of the reinstatement.

We were so excited to be done with hand washing dishes. We filled the Dishwasher. Then started it. Then it stopped and bleeped. It's flashing a warning code.

Manual says "water leak". We call the plumber. Thursday rocks around - he turns up and spends an hour playing with it and the plumbing - nope. It's not his work that's to blame. It's a case of horrible timing and our less-than-five-year-old dishwasher is playing up.

A man is now on his way to look at it. grrr...

You must be incredibly strong to deal with all of this. You sure don't seem to have much luck with things. I hope they improve for you.

Well...an hour of the dishwasher man pulling the thing apart and finding very little wrong with it, it turns out it was something to do with using Rinse Aid and it was also bad timing. Cleared up the moisture, reset the sensor or whatever it is they do and $109 later, we are washing dishes in the traditional way again (by that, I mean stacking the machine and pressing Go).

Looking forward to the day when all of this is finished and we can live a relaxed and (dare I say it) "normal" life again.

With regard to the luck thing...I reckon we should be about due some good luck - maybe a second division win on lotto or similar? Not sure I'd want the big one - that would bring its own bloody hassles.

Another variation on this is prevalent in the Contract employment market.

Recruiter: my client has an urgent requirement! Immediate start!

Candidate: Great. I’ll spend a couple of hours getting my CV tailored and send it in.

Recruiter: Brilliant. Would you be free for interviews next week?

Candidate: Yes I would.

(4 weeks passes)

Candidate: Any news on that urgent job?

Recruiter: Ummm…. They had no budget/appointed an internal candidate/the manager is off sick/Covid/etc.

Finding out that 'From 26 May 2023, most New Zealand banks (see list of banks below) will be processing payments every day of the year, including weekends and public holidays. '.

Yay, welcome to the 21st century NZ banks.

To me this is good news and worthy of a smile, but the annoying thing is I don't find out about this from my bank, but via email from Southern Cross.

The lack of professional attitudes to work. I asked a professional to do something for me 3 days ago. After radio silence for 3 days I get this:

“Sorry about delay. I’m away for the weekend at a family function.
Yes having the option would help. I’m still working out where the solution lies. I’ll pick it up again for you on Monday. 👍”

Ok then. I mean, I’m only paying your bills….

Being “At a family function” isn’t an excuse for not doing what your clients asked you to do.

I think you'll have to pay a lot more if you want someone to be at your beck and call without weekends off.

Presumably you did tell them that this was of the utmost urgency and needed to be done before the weekend? And they did agree to that?

The utter uselessness of the official Auckland Transport app in, well most things in general, but here's the latest specific case: I want to confirm that the bus from X to Y will get me to Y in time for a scheduled event. I know when the bus leaves X and it should get me there in plenty of time, but I just want to check in case they relax the schedule for evening runs or something.

The AT app has me catch a much earlier bus than the intended one, get out about halfway there, wait around for 10 to 15 minutes, transfer to another bus that runs on exactly the same route as the first one at that point, and then gets to the same place the first bus was going. What's more, no matter what I do I can't get it to show me the bus run that I want to catch, it's either much earlier ones or, mostly, multi-bus transfers to go along one fixed route.

How can you write an app this useless? There's a direct connection from X to Y and they've somehow managed to split it across two bus runs (one option showed three) that take an extra quarter to half hour or so to get you there.

Programmer and was bored and you’ve discovered a hostile Easter egg.
(Is there a term for hostile Easter eggs?)

If you know where the job is stalk their public staff page if they have one for changes.

They’ve had since Monday to do something that could be completed in less than an hour.

I clearly have higher standards than most. I’ve worked on Christmas Day to satisfy requests from clients before now.
