Well, just don't suggest it to Microsoft or they'll probably make it as bad as the one in Outlook. Oh wait...

Yup, that's another one of the million annoyances, "we couldn't find an exact match so we'll just start returning random results instead. You're welcome".
It's actually difficult to talk about one piece of Outlook braindamage without it reminding you of a half-dozen other related pieces of braindamage.

You still would have to know what you are looking for, and how it is worded in what you are searching.

Nah, see my previous reply, Outlook will just return random results if you get it slightly wrong. So it's like asking ChatGPT for an answer, you don't get a correct answer but instead a hallucination where it makes up stuff for you.

Or....Google.....or Mitre10 etc search these days!
So many annoyances. So little time.
I have a laptop that died. It had been working but I don’t use it regularly and I left it sitting for a couple weeks. When I tried to turn it on, it was completely unresponsive. I tried the usual things, reset the battery, then disconnected it completely, but nothing made any difference.
I have some electronics know-how, but not enough to diagnose this. So I took the laptop to a repair place. The gentleman behind the counter sniffed at it a few times, listened to my story, and declared it DOA. He said there was probably a blown capacitor on the motherboard and it couldn’t be fixed and wouldn’t be worth it if it could. He was quite definitive.
I was prepared to give up on it after that but I decided to get a second opinion and took it to another hole in the wall repair place. There I was met by a breezy Indian chap who immediately said he knew what the problem was and told me to come back in an hour when it would be fixed. Could this be true, I wondered? I had my doubts but I came back in an hour and the laptop booted up without problem! Wow.
So this story should really go on the smile thread but what annoys me, and not just a little bit, is the arrogant dickhead who tried to persuade me that the computer was beyond rescuing. If you are in the fixing business, you have a responsibility to your customers to at least be straight with them. If you lack the skills, or you just can’t be bothered, then say so but don’t start spewing BS that may cause people to abandon a perfectly good piece of kit, with all the expense and inconvenience that goes with that. I would gladly name and shame the dickhead business here, but I don’t want to get sued. If anyone in Hastings needs a warning, PM me.

Did you find out what the problem was? Most of the time that a laptop won't start, I try a combination of long-pressing various buttons and removing the battery, and eventually it comes back to life somehow.

He said something about it being the module that takes power from the battery or adaptor and feeds that to the mainboard. I don't remember exactly. It must be a familiar problem because he knew immediately what it was as soon as I described the symptoms (unlike the dickhead). I did try every type and combination of long and short key and button press over several days, as well as removing the battery and resetting it several times. Nothing I did would bring it to life. I am just relieved it is working again.

The third consecutive time my sons school squash team has travelled to another location after school for an inter-school match and the opposing team has not turned up at all and hasn't advised they can't make it. A huge PITA as it's not easy to get 8 kids to and from locations after school and requires parent volunteers.
I just received my first Nigerian prince scam e-mail in Te Reo. From someone called Kristalina Georgieva. Obviously run through machine translation, but it's the usual spiel about excess funds, wanting me to mail someone with a suspiciously West African-looking name to sort it out.
Full marks for imagination, I suppose.

Yesterday I got 91 fuel from BP Cumberland St Dunedin. I'm positive I saw $2.159 on the sign! Hence why I pulled in.
First issue. After scanning one card scanned, price is displayed with the discount (6c + 4c). Person says the price. Then the price changes as I hand over cash. Person notices but says nothing until I say I'm sure that price just changed! Sure enough one card discount was removed. So had to manually apply. Person was at a loss for this. This is annoying as quite often we just assume all is correct. So they win if you don't notice.
2nd problem is I was charged more than the displayed price. Only worked this out by looking at receipt later on. Rang a few times to check this, but didn't get very far as basically my word over theirs. Only a few cents, but still just annoys the crap out of you. Sure I might have miss read the sign. Anyone else notice this?
And when I got to Mosgiel, it was ironic to find they were $2.15. Mosgiel people will know they price gouge you all the time!
neb: Another item from the perpetual annoyance machine that is Outlook 365, when you acknowledge a meeting invite it auto-deletes the message that it's part of from your inbox so you have to dig through the deleted messages folder to get the meeting notes back. Yet another one of Outlook 365's million "which cretin thought doing this was actually a good idea?" features.
And another one: When it auto-creates a calendar entry for you as it auto-deletes the email with the meeting notes, it also removes the Teams (in this case) link from the email, or at least rewrites it so it can't be clicked on any more. So you have to switch from email to calendar, find the meeting day and time, click on the link, and then click your way back to the email with the stuff you need for the meeting in it.
