On the first page it asks you for user name but doesnt tell you if it is available so you fill 2 pages in and push save only to tell you the name is taken and pick another one , so you go back a page and find you have to start again. I did it 3 times before i quit pissed of as every name was taken . Maybe tell me if a name is taken when i choose it.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Handsomedan:

That THIS can happen in a supposed civilised society!

A young girl having Maccas with her friends in Glenfield and she gets assaulted viciously by a thug who has Main Character Syndrome. Because they laughed. Not at her, but in general. You know, enjoying themselves. As children should be able to.

There's no positive way to spin this - this person is a sociopath and should be removed from society until such time that their brain has developed enough to realise that this behaviour simply can't be tolerated in society. What drives a person to be so aggressive that they deem it OK to kick a young girl in the head repeatedly for a perceived slight?

Um... known lack of consequences?

So many vicious assaults these days involving attacks to the head of defenseless victims - kicking and stomping. This sort of attack should be considered an attempted murder, not an assault that attracts a slap on the hand with wet bus ticket consequence.

<sigh> Kick the crap out of someone's head and face and... "referred to youth aid". I'm sorry but that just doesn't cut it. That the perpetrator thought that she could get away with it in the first place indicates that a "referral to youth aid" is not going to work.

Prime Minister Hipkins on the AM show this morning said that he believed that the law had been broken and there should be consequences for the law breaker (or words to that effect).

Obviously this is what the consequences are. A chat with a social worker.

Reading more about Youth Aid and the way in which young offenders are dealt with, it certainly feels to the outsider like a young offender is cared about more than the victim.

https://youthlaw.co.nz/rights/police-the-youth-justice-system/the-youth-justice-system/

What is the Youth Justice System?

When young people under the age of 18 offend, or are suspected of offending, they will generally go through the Youth Justice System. The Youth Justice System makes sure that a young person is dealt with in a way that acknowledges their needs and general well-being, while ensuring they are held accountable.

Most young offenders are kept out of courts. Minor offences are dealt with out of court by Police Youth Aid officers through Alternative Action Plans. More serious offending is dealt with by the Ministry for Children – Oranga Tamariki through a family group conference, and most serious offences will go through the Youth Court (or adult court).

What is deemed serious offending?
It appears from these pages that serious offending is murder or manslaughter.

I am 14-17.

If you are aged between 14 and 17, you can be formally charged and prosecuted for any offence.

Serious offences like murder, manslaughter, arson, and in the case of 17 years olds “more serious” offences, are dealt with through the adult criminal courts.

For most other offences, you would go through the Youth Justice System and could be:

None of this feels like the crimes are treated with the gravity that they need to be. It feels like the system is set up to address the perpetrator's wellbeing.

It really feels to me, a normal law abiding New Zealander, like a young person could effectively get away with almost anything if they have the right sob story and a slightly less than stellar upbringing.
It annoys me.

Whilst I understand the desire for punishment, it's my view that the young offender is almost always also a victim... of poor parenting, and an uncaring society. If a "short, sharp slap" would result in them never offending again, I'd say go for it every time. But in reality, for years they've had harder knocks than society can morally deliver, and punishment is just get reinforcement that society really doesn't care about them. If it's any consolation, they're going to receive plenty more punishment over the years.

We continue to see babies under 2 beaten to death. You can bet that for every death, there's a dozen that are saved by hospitalisation, and for every one of those there's a dozen that physically healed at home, and for each of those there's a dozen 2-5yos that are beaten. What's their future if not gangs and drugs and crime and violence?

At my local PaknSav, at the egg section, there is a sign that states
"Egg supply
Due to new regulations
Unfortunately, we are experiencing
a shortages of eggs"
Etc

Err, no. It wasn't the new regulations, it was Countdown and Foodstuffs that according to "public pressure", decreed that colony cage eggs were no longer acceptable.

I don't think I've met a person who readily accepts the price hike is a good trade off for losing a good protein source for those on constrained budgets.

The grammar jarred my sensibilities.

The fact that AT's virtue signalling has now reached the point where it's impacting people's ability to make use of public transport. To explain, when the buses come to a transport hub there's an announcement about connections to other buses and whatnot telling people where to go to get the connecting bus they want. As part of a recent virtue signalling upgrade, AT first have a lengthy version of the announcement in Maori, which from a quick informal survey of the bus approximately, oh, zero percent of passengers speak [*], followed at length, starting just before the bus drops everyone off and you don't get to hear the info you need any more, by the same thing in English, which 100% of the passengers speak.

While I have nothing against virtue signalling if you feel the need to do it, in this case it's actually preventing people from getting the information they need to make their bus connections. In terms of selling the public on the use of Maori, using it to block people's access to timely transport information seems like the perfect boneheaded way to do it.

[*] It's spoken by about 3% of the overall population, this is Auckland's north shore so on this bus it was probably closer to zero percent.

I get really annoyed by the Cadbury commercials that keep wonking on about 'a glass and a half'. If you want a glass and a half of milk, why on earth would you eat a chocolate bar? Just drink the f-ing milk!

Just remember, when they say "glass and a half of milk" add "and eleven spoonfuls of sugar too!". That's two full days worth of sugar intake alongside your glass and a half.

I no longer buy sweets (with the exception of 60/70% chocolate). If I want balsamic cranberry truffle pralines, for example, I (unfortunately😉) have to make them myself for us. What is called a "chocolate bar" these days is usually nothing more than a collection of chemicals, cheap fats and sugar.

- NET: FTTH, OPNsense, 10G backbone, GWN APs, ipPBX
- SRV: 12 RU HA server cluster, 0.1 PB storage on premise
- IoT:   thread, zigbee, tasmota, BidCoS, LoRa, WX suite, IR
- 3D:    two 3D printers, 3D scanner, CNC router, laser cutter

Punishment doesn't need to be incarceration for a start, but that needs to be a known, guaranteed end-point if initial options don't work. I don't think we are allowed to know if this 14yo has been in the system before.

First chance: counseling and family intervention. Second chance: a punishment of public shame such as picking up litter, removing graffiti. Third chance: removal liberty to a secure facility with availability of education and training.

But as you say, this is ambulance at the bottom of the cliff. What went wrong with parenting in the household? This is problem that took generations to create and it will take generations to resolve, unfortunately.

Interestingly, my local Countdown has been selling some "Farmer Brown" colony cage eggs - I'm guessing because others are in short supply and these are available. I bought some yesterday because they were the cheapest.

It's fairly ironic that upon the demise of our long serving sturdy kitchen scissors, their purchased replacement was packed in a hard plastic shell that required a sturdy pair of scissors to open...
