Saw that on the app update this morning but no use to me. Only thing that would be any use are loyalty cards or the at hop card since my main bank is asb so all good to go.

The rubbish cards aucklanders have to use on public transport. The ones where loading them needs a giant terminal that apparently is so expensive they can only afford to put them in a tiny number of shops.

Bit of a shame as AT HOP support would benefit a lot more people. Snapper is also EOL basically since GWRC seems to be looking at adopting integrated ticketing across all PT operators (not just Wellington NZ Bus services that accept Snapper as per the current situation). Given the Auckland experience I would not be surprised if they went with a Mifare system (possibly piggy-backing on the Auckland system) rather than Snapper.

Is the Mifare system used by AT HOP compatible with Semble or is there any issues that would prevent that?

Strange I manage to top these up online with no issues. In any case I have auto top-up enabled on my card which is very useful. Neither of which Snapper offers (the online top up on Snapper requires a device before anyone says you can top up online -- AT HOP have no such requirements).

Online topup on at hop doesn't work for buses. Only the fixed terminals which have an always on connection. Unless you do it the night before. But even then it's not a sure thing.

There was outrage when they took the top up machine from the local post shop with lousy hours and took ages to get one in the dairy that is open till 10 most nights. People need cash topups and at hop makes that a lot harder than it needs to be.

I agree it can be a of a hassle when the bus terminals don't have recent online transactions available to be applied to cards. However I think auto top up makes manual top-up (whether it is online/card-not-present or a card-present transaction at a retailer) redundant. I have mine set up top up by $10 when the balance goes under $10 so I just maintain a small balance with auto top up doing its magic. Good for those on low incomes and/or busy people who don't have time to go through the top up process.

I also find the AT Hop customer service to be much better due to the option of delayed card-not-present transactions being available to them. I recently lost my card, then on the way home after work I grabbed a new card at my local bus/train interchange station (which was changing buses at anyway) and requested a balance transfer, had the transfer applied to my new card when I tagged on at 8:30am the next day on my way to work. So all was sorted pretty easily.

It was interesting to compare with my experience losing a card and requesting a balance transfer to a new card back when Snapper was operating in Auckland -- they refused to do a card-not-present balance transfer. I then had to visit Britomart (which was the only place where they could do it and a 30mins one-way trip out of my way) where they loaded the balance on to the new card I presented to them.

I suppose the point I am trying to make is that delayed card-not-present transactions can be helpful even though they don't take effect straight away. Another good use for them is renewing your monthly pass a few days before expiry. Monthly pass users often travel on at least 2 buses every workday so if they purchase a pass online 2-3 working days days before expiry there is a 99.9%+ probability they will encounter a bus that will apply their pass before they need to use it.

You can now top up Snapper straight from the smartphone.

You would need the NFC SIM to support DESFire emulation, for example using http://mifare4mobile.org/

I don't know if the current Semble issued SIMs include any DESFire emulation, the individual operators would need to confirm.

I would love to see the Christchurch MetroCard come on board. I believe they still use Mifare classic cards but they planned to upgrade to DESFIRE

Of course their machines may be able to be setup to read other types of NFC

You're lucky your balance transfer was effective the next day. I had to wait a further 7-10 days just to see that balance from my previous HOP card, applied to my new HOP card.

not "every other" . No-one supports the Z1 Compact, but it still works if you set the sim up on a compatible phone and set to "always on" and then put the sim back in your phone
