SJB:
The 6pm news could easily go down to 30 mins. After the first 15-20 mins it tends to be magazine type articles anyway and sport normally only has enough to fill 5 minutes.
The question is what do they fill the spare 30 minutes with?
Reality Television...seems to be the go-to these days
Handsome Dan Has Spoken.
Handsome Dan needs to stop adding three dots to every sentence...
Handsome Dan does not currently have a side hustle as the mascot for Yale

From memory, TV3 actually were the first to introduce the 1-hour news thing during the Gulf War, way back in 1991. They saw there was a need for as much coverage of the war as possible, and most Kiwis couldn't afford Sky, so they expanded the bulletin from 30 minutes to 60, with TVNZ later following suit (pushing Holmes out to 7 o'clock). It's been an hour ever since, long after the Gulf War ended.
Times have changed a lot since 1991 though, and I don't think there's a huge need for a whole 60 minutes of news anymore.
There is plenty of worthwhile news to fill a one hour slot. Unfortunately TV One can't do a live cross to it from their parking lot.

Perhaps they could take a half hour feed from Al Jazeera journalists on the ground in Gaza.

When TV1 leaves a political journo at Wellington Airport all day (after the 757 was grounded and they couldnt get their junket across to Australia paid for by the taxpayer) you wonder at the value of the role..... and yes, they did a live cross at 6pm to say the 757 was grounded.
They had a live cross to standing outside of newshub where they did all the cliché things that makes TV news the joke that it is. Repeating what the studio person said. Telling things are going on inside the building that they were outside. Videoing the people leaving the place generating some grief-pron for the viewers.
The whole industry is a caricature.

I used to think state owned broadcasters were a good idea, but that was when they were editorially neutral and objective. We haven't had that for years, maybe decades. Add in the strings attached media funding and it's all a bit ... icky, from a democratic perspective.
Citation required.
I'm not sure if: -
You want a citation for my opinion on lack of editorial neutrality? (MikeAqua 20124, pers. comm.)
Or, would you like a direct quote from the contract template for the Public Interest Journalism Fund (publicly available info and very easily located, just not from MSM) emphasis is mine: -
"You will use best endeavours to ensure all Content reflects and develops New Zealand identity and
culture. In addition, where appropriate, you will use your best endeavours to ensure the Project and all
Content:
reflects Māori issues in a way relevant to all New Zealanders;
reflects New Zealand’s ethnic and cultural diversity as well as the needs of other minorities and cultures
in the community;
seeks to inform and engage the public about issues that affect a person’s right to flourish within our
society and impact on society’s ability to fully support its citizens;
provides accurate, accountable, and fair coverage that reflects and empowers all sectors of the
community upholding the public’s right to know;
actively promotes the principles of Partnership, Participation and Active Protection under Te Tiriti o
Waitangi acknowledging Māori as a Te Tiriti partner; and"
Now, I happen to think those requirements range from "Well, duh"!- to relatively benign. But that isn't the point. Those are still conditions that pertain to the editorial stance of media outlets. That shouldn't happen (ever) in democracy.
If the govt (whoever is in power) wants to convey a particular message through the media, then they should transparently pay for advertising, like anyone else. Also AFAIK there is no right to "flourish" under NZ law. That would be tantamount to making happiness a right.
Mike
"I think politicians of all parties probably think they get unfair treatment from the media but the bottom line is you play a very important role in our democracy," Luxon said.
However, NZ First MP Shane Jones interrupted Luxon's comments, saying "a vibrant economy will be good for the media, bye bye," before promptly walking off.
Yep, Luxon's definitely running the show there 🙄
Another lesson here is that if your workplace gets taken over by a 'Global' company that has a falling share price.
Bad stuff can happen.
And now some large cuts announced at TVNZ:
Hard to know how public broadcasting can be saved. In the above article it is suggested a $5 per capita per month levy would fund TVNZ. However I don't really like much of anything on TVNZ and for that $25 from our household could fund a couple of streaming services - say Netflix and YT Premium. If I had to chose I would go with the latter.

I contribute $10 a month to Newsroom and would happily pay the same again for RNZ, but I wouldn't pay anything for TVNZ. I haven't watched anything on the latter for at least 20 years.
NZHerald used to be the NZ Paper of Record ... now it is dreck. Online article today about International Womens' Day and an all female crew on a JQ flight has had two different stock photos of a female pilot... both with FO stripes, whilst talking about a female captain Katherine Stacey. Just appalling, lazy, ignorant journalism.
