Wow, amazing thread. I just read it from start to finish.

Here is my two cents (alright, two and a half)

OK, I think there will be three phases to the Zombie Apocalypse;

  • Initial outbreak
During the initial outbreak it is going to be chaos. The dead will walk the earth and try to eat all the brains they can get. Your immediate goal is to get somewhere safe right now! The next five seconds may be your last five seconds. I would say the best bet is to get to the harbour, get on something that floats and get away from land.

It doesn't matter what you are on just that getting to you on the water is harder than getting to other brains on land. From here you can steal a better boat for later.
  • Organised resistance
This is the bit where the 'powers that be' try to save civilization, for themselves. This is doomed but can be a good time for you. During this time the goal is to gather supplies and plan for the medium term. I would head to Nelson or any decent fishing port, probably by boat, and try to get a fishing vessel. The bigger the better but small to medium size beats nothing. This shouldn't be too hard. Possibly tow it out to sea before boarding. Fishing boats are designed to be self-sufficient and have decent range. During this phase you should gather a crew along with weapons and food. Preferred weapons are firearms, high caliber rifles but trying to gather too much ammo will slow you down. Women, preferably the partner/wife or at least not cousins are gathered during this phase.

Remember you are not going to kill them all, don't bother trying. The goal is to make eventual departure easier and more successful, not wiping out the zombie hoards. Even with one bullet per zombie there isn't enough ammo in NZ for the job. If you stay and fight they will get you in the end, there are too many.
  • Eventual re-ordering of society
Right, got your boat, got your crew, got your supplies; where to? The Maui Gas Field. In the long term security means energy security. The goal is to take over one of the gas platforms in the Maui. This is well enough away from the zombies on land and has plenty of energy. Again, it is designed to be self-sufficient so you have time for re-engineering to a self-sustaining system. Fishing can provide basic food (probably won't carry the virus as they are not mammals) in the medium term and evaporation can provide water.

Oh yeah, can if the zombies or anybody else do come calling, why not say "Hello" with a flamethrower powered with natural gas, a gas fields worth of natural gas. A self destruct mechanism will discourage any powerful warship from taking your possession.

Today the richest, most powerful people are the ones who control the energy supply, following the Zombie Apocalypse that could be you.

Well, that's how I see it.

Does it count if I say "let myself be turned into a zombie"? What if it is really fun to be a zombie?!

I think a few containers under the house, stocked with water and food, some UV lamps, and some plants (fruit and the likes) might go down a treat.

Walking to work this morning in AKL I was thinking about my Zombie survival plans and had an epiphany.

Now, where can I find a house with a moat and a decent stock of Pirahna's?

Hmmm I see your thinking, very clever!

Zombie tries to wade over and hungry piranhas chow on them!

Though ... after a while you'd have a moat of hungry zombie-piranhas ... who might not eat zombies anymore :-(

Coming to a street near you. In todays news:

A Chinese woman has had to undergo extensive plastic surgery after a crazed bus driver pinned her down and began chewing her face.     It is at least the sixth such bizarre and gruesome attack, with several stories about cannibalism recently making headlines across the world.

The UK's Independent said the attack happened last week in the city of Wenzhou, south east China. Witnesses caught it on camera and posted footage on YouTube.

It was reported the man, known to locals as Dong, had been drinking heavily during a lunch with friends before running on to a busy street and stopping traffic.

He targeted a car being driven by a woman identified only as Du, jumping on her bonnet and hammering on the windscreen.

Witnesses said Du sat inside screaming but then scrambled out of the car. Dong chased her before leaping on top of her and biting and chewing her face.

Witnesses tried to pull the "crazed" Dong off her, but were unable to.

Police eventually arrived at the scene and restrained and arrested the man, but not before he had caused considerable damage to the woman's face.

The attack is the latest in a string of "face chewing" incidents around the world.

Eugene Rudy made headlines in May, when he ate the face off  65-year-old homeless man Ronald Poppo in Miami.

The 31-year-old was shot and killed by police during the incident, but not before he had eaten about 75 per cent of the man's face. Poppo lost an eye and suffered extensive injuries to the rest of his face.

Also that month, Alexander Kinyua, a 21-year-old Morgan State University student, admitted to murdering his roommate Kujoe Bonsafo Agyei-Kodie and eating his brain and heart.

The Kenyan student took to Facebook to rant about 'mass human sacrifices' before the attack in the suburbs of Baltimore.

In Canada, porn star Luka Magnotta allegedly murdered his 33-year-old Chinese lover Jun Lin in a Montreal flat on the evening of May 24.

Parts of the university student's body then turned up in the mail at political offices in Ottawa, including the Canadian prime minister's party headquarters, as well as some schools.

In June, 26-year-old Charles Baker got naked before storming his girlfriend's Florida home and eating the flesh off a man's arm. He continued through a barrage of police Taser guns until he was eventually tackled.
