What I felt in ChCh maybe 3 minutes after must have been yours in WLG.

I know it takes about 2 seconds for a jolt to travel across ChCh, (happened on phone twice) so maybe 2 to 3 minutes from WLG to CHCH is about right?

Real roller.

Yes it was a roller, in the harbour a few km from Lytelton. Usually they gave been jolts or sharp shaking. The 7.1 aftershocks were a mix, many finished with an almost gentle sideways rolling.

The 10-12 was here, 10 minutes drive away a 3.6 shallow

tdgeek: As I was saying, the Alpine Fault is the big worry. a M 8 locally and a 7 here in ChCh. That fault runs up the alps on the west coast side I think, under WLG and up the east coast on the North Island.

God knows if that went, what that and these 4 here would do.

This is from memory, but...

The Wellington Fault is the Wellington Fault - it is independent from the Alpine Fault and not an extension of the Alpine Fault. The Wellington Fault system is believed to be connected to the Wairarapa Fault system.

The active expression of the Alpine Fault heads out into the Pacific Ocean at Kaikoura. The Alpine Fault did run further North a long time ago, but every X millions years it jumps South. The rolling hills of North Canterbury are due to buckling of the earths crust in that area from pressure (lack of movement) on the Alpine and Kaikoura Fault Systems and one day the active expression of the Alpine Fault with snap/jump south into North Canterbury. (Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy...)

Hence the entire North Island, the top chunk of the South Island, and the West coast are on one side of the plate boundary, and the rest of the South Island is on the other side.

Smile

*disclaimer: It is quite a while since I was actively involved with the Geological Sciences, but above is what I recall about the relevant fault systems.

At the time of the big one I was downloading a file. I courageously bolted out the door and watched the power wires
dance in the street.

When i got back indoors the downloading had not missed a beat, not even a much as a flicker.

My ISP Snap is located in Christchurch, so well done Snap.
