Endured American Hustle. A cure for insomnia if ever there was one.

Thought with all the hype it must be good, sadly not for me or the missus. Christian Bale was an odd choice for the role. Over-acted to the point of being silly by Bradley Cooper, and below par from Jennifer Lawrence. Amy Adams however did a good job and shook off her 'good girl' image, and some good support acting. I am still not sure anything of note actually happened in the story. A whole lot of nothing for 2 hours.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

Non-stop - for me it's 7 out of 10

Not as good as Taken, IMO, but passable for a Saturday afternoon

The Veronica Mars movie. Was quite surprised to see it available on Google Play Movies almost simultaneously with its US cinema release (watched in HD from Note 3 connected to HDTV via MHL). This should happen more often :)

Absolutely loved the movie as a fan of the TV show.

Lost most, if not all, it's charm and shock value from the first movie. 5/10

Really don't know what to make of this. Well made, excellent cast, and each story was so different to the others, yet I feel like I'm missing something. This one gets a ?/10 as I don't know if I like it or not - either way I can't stop thinking about it. Frustrating really.

Riddick

Ok. The odd colour scheme made it look a bit fake. Didn't really progress the Riddick storyline much. Good to see Karl Urban in a short reappearance. One odd scene when Riddick told Starbuck he was going to basically rape her. 6.5/10

Red2: I know that someone previously said it was rubbish - and I watched it with some trepidation as a result - but I thoroughly enjoyed this!

It was action, comedy, drama and silliness all in one easy-to-consume package.

Not sure if it was as good as the first, as it was so different to the first one, but I thought it was great Saturday night entertainment for the wife and I.

Wife and I watched Enough Said, last of Gandolfini's screen appearance... We give it 7/10. Some laugh in good parts of the movie, an abrupt ending but not bad for 90 minutes.

Had a couple of days off work sick last week, so watched a couple of films:

Trance - 5/10

Generally like Danny Boyle's films, and Jame McAvoy is usually okay, so I thought this one would be safe. But it fell a bit short for what I was expecting.
The basic plot revolves around the theft of a painting from an auction. The upfront twist (not giving away any spoilers here) is that the "inside man" suffers a bump to the head and ends up with amenesia, meaning he can't remember what he did with the painting he stole. A hypnotherapist is then enlisted (initially, unwittingly) to help retrieve the lost memories. The real twist (which I won't reveal) was somewhat expected, but was a little unsatisfying. I put it down to the characterisation which seemed poorly executed. None of the characters acts as you would expect them to; ordinarily, I would welcome this kind of break with tradition but here it just feels confused and awkward. I spent a lot of time wondering why the police seemed completely uninterested in the theft of a multi-million dollar painting, why the group of thieves seem reasonably relaxed about the length of time it took to find the painting, why the hypnotherapist seemed unfazed about being involved with the thieves. It's possible that things didn't make sense because I had a throbbing headache and sore throat (teach me for watching complex films while being sick). But I doubt that accounts for the whole thing.

Don Jon - 7/10

A film from the brain of Joseph Gordon-Levitt (he wrote, directed, and starred in it - yep, one of those), it's about, well, umm, self-love. Kind of. Actually, it's probably more about addiction generally, though the material is NSFW. JGL plays Jon, an Italian-American represented by archetypes: fastidious in his care for his apartment, his family, his physique, his faith, his many female liaisons, and his collection of adult material. Scarlett Johannsen is the woman of his dreams, playing hard to get. When he finally gets her, though, he finds that his addictions affect his love life, despite his denials. What makes the film interesting is the refreshingly honest portrayal of addiction. It's close, but not quite the same, as Silver Linings Playbook in the way it treated mental illness, and doesn't have quite the same depth of characters. Though Tony Danza does give a convincing portrayal of the archetypal Italian-American alpha male, as Jon's father. Rounding out the cast is Julianne Moore, portraying the sole sane voice of reason amongst the bizarre roll of characters. If you get past the titilating subject matter, it's a pretty decent film with a heart.

Goes to show these are subjective. I actually quite enjoyed it. Cool story, awesome set pieces, and some pretty nice sfx. Then again it was right up my alley. Not quite in the same league but other top fav's are The Seven Samurai and Red Wall.
I would give 47 Ronin 7/10 for a good couple of hours of escapism.

After a rabbit hole of a morning on wikipedia (long story, started at GitMo), I finally got around to seeing "Bronson".
Tom Hardy is a brilliant actor.
The movie is very weird though. 6.8/10

47 ronin was finished in 2011 and spent 2 years in limbo as the studio tried to "fix" it.

left in rinsch's hands it may have been better, though the script still handicaps it (written by the guy who wrote fast and furious tokyo drift!).

speaking of fast...

a superb documentary on the dangerous days of formula 1;

1 - life on the limit, good interviews, excellent historical footage
